My wife and I are coming to Stt on July 20th and staying at Frenchmans Reef. We are wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting us for a drink and giving us the low down on living on the islands. We have 3 kids(2,7,8) and our main concern is education. Are there any homeschooling groups ect. Any info would be greatly appreciated. You can either post or email direct. Thanks!

Aaron,

How interesting! We stayed at the Marriot our first time here and we have 3 kids about the same age as yours. We had the same concerns as you about education. You might read some of my former posts about schools. Where are you from? We moved here from Missouri about 1 year ago.

Our story in short is that we tried homeschooling, however I found it difficult to teach two different grades and care for my 1 year old. I felt it was too much, so we enrolled them in public school. They went into Kindergarten and 1st grade in February at Peace Corps Elementary. I really liked their teachers and they had caught up and were doing excellent by the end of the year. My Kindergartner was reading! I had concerns about public schools based on reputation, but was pleasantly surprised. I have heard that Sibily elementary school (also public) has quite a few mainlander kids enrolled there and parents are pleased with that school as well.

There are many private schools that we liked, but we couldn't afford tuition for two children. There also is a homeschooling type group on Water Island. Many people who live and travel on boats homeschool their kids and when in port on STT they come to a one room school house on Water Island. The school is mostly outdoors, but they do have a building and teach K-12. They have one or maybe two teachers by now for all grades. They have each child learn his or her own way (with more visual type learning - if that makes sense) and older children help teach to the younger ones. They do have a tuition that is very affordable or you can join the homeschool group and trade materials. The only trouble we had is the travel back and forth to Water Island. We don't have a boat and live on STT so we went with the public school (for now).

So you have many choices, but unfortunately it usually comes down to money. Please let us know more about yourself and how it goes on your PMV. I would love to meet you all, but I have a lot of family coming in on the 19th and my time is limited. Please feel free to post to me or send me a message. Good luck! 🙂

Teresa
