does anyone know if I can open a Post Office box without actually living there yet? Looks like my PMV in August might be a final move visit and I want to start sending my stuff down.
Thanks

I got a po box without living here prior to moving. I went thru the Sugar Estate Post Office. You could also check with East End Secretarial in Red Hook. I know they have po boxes.

We are also looking to set up a PO BOX and want to take care of it from NYC, before we arrive. We will be renting a house in the East End B section, but my fiance will also be working in downtown Christiansted. Can you give any more details about what is entailed in setting one up? Documents needed? Cost?
THANKS!

I got a P.O. Box at the Kingshill Post Office on STX when on-island in January (about 5 months before moving here). The process, selection, and price, was the same as in the states, where I still have another P.O. Box. You have to fill out a short application form and the annual cost was about $35.00 for a mid-size box. There were quite a few of various sizes available in January. The whole process took about 30 minutes. The main difference between the Post Office here and mine back in the states is that the lobby where the P.O. Boxes are is not open 24 hours per day. I think that having the P.O. Box prior to moving made the change of address process a lot easier. However, I do not know if you have to be on-island to purchase the P.O. Box.

Ok - here is the straight up and low down, directly from the mouth of the man that owns the Red Hook Mail Service. You can NOT get a box until you are here, becuase ID's and such are needed but they can set it up for you to receive mail prior to your arrival.

He said to call them: Red Hook Mail Service 340-779-1890

They are located in new offices on the 2nd floor of the shops on the North side of the street in Red Hook - the East End of the island.

Hello,

When I think Post Office Box... I think US Post Office... as in the USPS.

So for a US Post Office Box the process according to the main Post Office on St. Croix... didn't get an answer at the St. Thomas location is:
*Fill out an Application
*2 forms of ID for each person on the application, the box will be under the main person's name but additional persons can be added to the application.
*a document proving your physical address in the Virgin Islands (lease, utility bill, deed...)
*$48 fee for small boxes, next size up is $76 a year
*$4 each key

Q. Can I set up a Post Office Box if I am not yet on island?
Ans. No, you must show proof of your physical address on island.

Q. What if I have items to mail before getting there?
Ans. You can send them General Delivery. We hold General Delivery for 10 days so you'd want to coordinate shipping them with your arrival.

Sissem, on St. Croix I have seen folks on the board recommend Mailboxes Etc. 340-719-5131 as an alternate postal location. And it seems they will set it up prior to you being on island by e-mailing or faxing the forms to you to fill out.

PS. I looked on the USPS web site and they call themselves the Post Office and the others... Alternate Postal Locations. 🙂
