Should I apply directly to the school itself?

Hello Bob,
For private schools you have to apply to the school itself. The private schools with web sites like Good Hope, Country Day, Antilles ect. have a section on how to apply, what they need and sometimes an application so check that out and see.
For public schools its through the dept. of education.
