Public Transportation

Yes, there is both bus service and "dollar taxis" on STX. I believe it is reliable. However, I don't think there is much coverage east of C'sted. Using public transportation all the time, without a family to provide other transportation would be very hard, in my opinion.

Thanks Linda! I was in Bermuda recently and I was shocked how great their buses and mini buses were. I was hoping that STX might be similar. Well anyway I'm hoping that the buses and dollar buses will get me by until I can get a scooter or used car/truck. Any chance to find a used scooter their?

The public bus service is VERY unreliable. The taxis, which are $2.50, only run one route between Frederiksted and Christiansted, so you are very limited in areas you can access on the island. However, both towns, and the main shopping center - Sunny Isles - are accessible on the taxi route.

hmmm, that is bad news. Sounds like I'll definitely have to look for a backup plan. any shops selling used or new scooters?

There used to be a scooter rental/shop on St. Croix, but it closed a while back. I don't know of any presently open. You can check in the Avis for classifieds on used scooters or cars once on island. If you can't find a scooter on St. Croix, there are a few rental/shops on St. Thomas so you could buy one on St. Thomas and have it sent over to St. Croix on one of the barges.

Islander, any shops with new scooters for sale on STX?

There is a place called Tommy's Scooter rental here on stx. I think the rates are like $35./day. You can get a car for that. Plus - all it takes is hitting some gravel (esp. after a rain shower) for you to loose it.
