Good Morning!

My best friend and I had been planning on moving down to St. Thomas today 9/12.. From what I've heard from a friend on the island, it's going to be a very extensive clean-up, but it is moving along. We didn't have jobs lined up yet on the island and we're still waiting to hear if our apartment made it through the storm. At the very least, we wouldn't be able to come down until power and internet is restored as we are both in grad school online. In addition to that, we'd want it to be safe and have resources available to us with some possibility of a job.

Is there any information or advice that anybody could pass along on if this move would still be realistic any time in the near future? If so, when? I know this might be a difficult question, but any advice would help! We're feeling pretty stuck!

Hoping you all are safe,
Megan

Well, since we're still being asked to send supplies over to people already there, and since many of those will be out of the jobs they had before, and since we're not in season, I'd say you might want to rethink your plan.

If you could say what area could let you know better what the chances are that the apt is still there... I can see some of the internet services starting to come back up off the main feeders today which is a good thing. Power is going to take a bit. The power poles took a major hit and there are a lot of pole, lines, transformers down all over. WAPA is still doing evaluation to the plant and looking to see the state of the network. After the last big storm line crews came down from the states. That is going to be a lot harder to do after this one since Florida and Texas got hit so hard. After Marilyn in 95 it was 4-6 months for power to come back through WAPA. I was asking someone that works there the other day and he was saying that was a pretty good guess but they still did not know the full extent of what they were looking at. There will be a lot of work but it may not be in your field.... As far as safety goes there are a lot of boots being put on the ground to secure what is going on...

The apartment is in Frenchman's Bay just off Frenchman's Bay Road on Beverly Hills W. It's a lower unit.

If you have trade skills in the construction industry there might be a need for you sooner than later otherwise I'd say wait at least a year too.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I was set to move down next month. It breaks my heart to hear of everything that is happening.

Huh??? The airport isn't even open yet. Y'all boating over?

Agree with wait a year. Trying to navigate unfimaliar territory and set up right now is just not feasible / in the middle of a crisis and it won't end well IMO. Unless you're a trauma nurse or a electrical linemen/contractor I would advise against moving here right now.

Plan B?

STX is relatively untouched by Irma but a totally different animal than STT so if ya really wanna USVI - it, maybe start research on STX life.

I have a gut feeling that STT will come back even bettter than before but it's gonna be a long road.

This is not a time to move to the territory, unless you are headed to St Croix. Even that island will be struggling to accommodate a lot of refugees from STT and STJ.

We have plenty of skilled workers here already, and they will be able to recruit the right people when/if more help is needed. Do NOT move here without a job for at least a year. We do not have a tourism industry right now, and it will be a long time before there is anything for tourists to enjoy.

No offense, but we do not need more mouths to feed and more people to look after from a security standpoint. Please, don't move here right now.
