Hey all,
Question:
Where would you go if you want to buy a new car (read: with financing) that so far you haven't seen on-island? Specifically, I am curious how, if I were so inclined, I would get a Nissan Murano, a Toyota Prius (hybrid) or a Ford Escape Hybrid to STT. Would you special order through a dealer? Would you still be able to get financing? This is a hypo only, I am not going to be buying a new car anytime soon. Just curious. Thanks.

These days it's very easy to buy stateside. The banks here will not finance a car that you are bringing in unless you have collateral to cover the loan before the car gets here or you are independantly wealthy. BUT, now there is something called Pentagon Credit Union in DC that anyone can use and as long as you qualify, they send you a check in your name straight to you in the mail! They have no island office and it seems like a lot of people are using it now.
As far as getting a special car, some people do it. I used to. I may consider it again with this new company around.

I have actually heard about the Pentagon Credit Union! One of my clients used it for bail $ for a relative. Let's not go there....
Ok, so the deal is I would buy stateside and have it shipped with taxes etc.?
Cheaper than having Caribben Auto Mart secure it for me? Would they even order it for me?

You can really make a good deal with the guys locally. The art of negotiation comes in handy. You can find, on the internet, actual invoice prices, as well as cost. You will then have something to go with. When I bought mine, I did that and bought it pretty cheap. I know they want the business. Also, as in the states, buy at the end of the month, when they are trying to meet their quotas!
As far as taxes, you would not pay sales tax if the car is slated to go out of the country. If foreign, you will pay the inport duties hashed out here several times before.
