Hello, all islanders and wanna-be islanders...and help! There is a tremendous amount of info on this board - my brain is in overdrive!

My husband is a pharmacist and we have been invited to come to STT for a job interview shortly; the company seems stable. We are having a midlife crisis and tired of the rat race...in Russellville, Arkansas...and yes, the rats race here as well! We figure it's our last chance to have Peewee's Big Adventure, so we are considering the move of a lifetime. No definite dates, just gathering info, and I know I will find many answers on this board, although I am in information overload at the present.

My biggest question is this - hang on - I do Rottweiler Rescue in the States and currently own 6 (yes S-I-X) Rotties and a mutt...three are Ever Ready bunnies that should have gone to the light a while back; they just keep ticking. Other than the obvious cost, and the obstacle of finding a house/rental with a large yard, how well accepted would even 2 of my dogs be on the islands? I understand the natural fear of this large breed. These are very well-behaved, well-trained dogs, are not used for guarding, etc...they are cocker spaniels in a REALLY big body.

I know this is a stupid question to start out with, but the kids are grown and this is where we are right now, with an impending move on the horizon, and one we would relish - still, to leave the family members behind would be almost impossible for me...struggling here....

Thx!

Becky R

The funny thing about rat races is that even if you win, you're still a rat!

Use the 'search' button on the Forum Tools menu and look for comments about dogs. You'll find plenty I'm sure.

As far as I can remember, dogs are not so welcome on the islands... I think one post said the locals fear dogs and may even poison them. Check it out though, I wouldn't want to bring my favorite pets to an environment like that.
Regards

You are going to have trouble finding a rental with 6 large dogs -- a lot of trouble.

yes, perhaps difficult finding the right rental. not impossible, however. i have 2 dogs who i would never consider traveling without (they came w/us from the other side of the globe) & have found 2 homes w/them. usually with private residences (not big apts/condo type places) where you can discuss w/the landlord directly you'll have more luck.

re:dogs' reception. not very dog-friendly. that said, i've lived in places which were less so. we always keep our dogs inside when not home & on leash except for one safe beach spot. too, we're very careful about anything they try to eat outside-people do poison dogs here. our dogs have a great life here, however-2x day beach walks/runs & go many places with us!

good luck!

Perhaps I misstated my case....not all 6 would be traveling, most likely...2 Rotties and a mutt would for sure. The Rotts have their Canine Good Citizenship awards and visit nursing homes, cancer wards for children, etc. They are HOUSE dogs, never outside unattended, never off lead if out in public. I am more concerned about islanders or ex-pats reaction to the Rottweiler breed - I face enough of that at home and am equipped to deal with disfavor. I have two very elderly Rotties who may or may not be with me at the time of our anticipated move that I will likely re-home through my rescue group. Is there an area of the island where perhaps there is a little more room on STT? Obviously, living directly in town and in the midst of a gazillion people is foolish - more room for human error - also, not my personal preference.

My husband and I will be doing our pre-move visit in June - I would expect he will go ahead of me and I will tie up loose ends, giving him time to find suitable housing (which I realize will be difficult).

I am going through the posts on moving with dogs...I've found labs and small dogs, but nothing of this sort...but thank you all for your help!

If you find a rental in the country or northside it will have more room and in some cases the landlords encourage dogs. As far as Rottweilers go, I see them all the time. The locals favor Pitbulls and to some extent Rottweilers. What you have to watch out for is that nobody steals your dog to use in fighting. Unfortunately some of our citizens are being dragged into the 21st century and still think dog fighting is a legitimate form of entertainment.

Thank you, Eric! Dogfighting...ugghhh...what I protest against constantly stateside...but it is good to know the facts - as I said, my dogs are never unattended nor off lead if in public, but it is good to know the fears that permeate stateside residents might not be quite as prevalent on the island.

We are planning our PMV as we speak - husband will only be present for a week, I will stay on to scope more of the island out and hopefully firm up our plans...in the meantime, we are overwhelmed with shedding our earthly belongings, but there is something strangely freeing about this.

There are lots of Rottweilers in my neighborhood in Estate Nazareth.
No rentals that I know of though, sorry.
