What is like to live on STX or STT with young kids (under 5)? Are there a lot of families? What kind of community exists?

I can't say what its like to have kids living here that are under 5, but I can say that by the time they are teenagers they can't wait to leave.

There is nothing but crime, drugs and excessive drinking here for teens.

Oh...maybe a movie once a week.

Yawn.

i would think it would be fine for the kids. i do not have any living here. there are activities for kids but i do think the states have more variety of things to do for the kids
beach, boating, boy scouts, girl scouts. on stx we have a bowling alley and a movie theater. i imagine it could get old after a while. but for the little ones, maybe not so bad.
no museums no weekend road trips......

My "kids" are in college now. But way back when (it seems yesterday, BTW) they were young, STT was great. Lots of play dates, mornings at the beach, afternoons by the pool. We had nice group of friends. We'd BBQ on the weekends, the kids would do sleep overs, Boating / camping trips to BVI & STJ. The key is to find like minded families. Shop around for pre-schools. Get involved. Both my girls are superior athletes. (oldest is a nationally ranked open water swimmer) They spent 80% of their early development in "motion" --running swimming climbing paddling riding. We also lived stateside when they were older. I don't think that the early years on STT put them at a disadvantage. Just the opisit. They seem to much less materialistic than their college age peers and much better equiped to deal with the unexpected.

My kids have what I believe to be an amazing life. In the past 1.5 yrs. , my kids have been involved in scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming , kayaking, paddle boarding, horsebackriding riding, sailing, volleyball, soccer, caporira, swimming with wild dolpins, travel yo other islan
Hiking, witnessing giant turtles emerging from the sea to lay eggs, observing turtle hatchlings......just to name a few.
I believe my kids have a greater appreciation for nature , are less materialistic and have unique learning opportunities not available anywhere else in the states.
If teens want to find trouble, they are going to find it no matter where they live. It is very typical for highscool grads to want to live away from home, at least for a bit. Many grads leave the island for college and return or not. Not unlike most places.

From my experience in the states their is nothing but crime, drugs and drinking for teens here too. I believe it is all in the parenting of your children and spending quality time with them no matter where you are at. Stay involved in their lives and know who their friends are, and their friends parents too. Just my opinion!

FYI drinking age is 18 here, so your kids will have legal access to it here sooner than in the states

And the saying goes, 'If you can put your money on the bar, you are old enough to drink.'

The difference is that in the states you can escape or insulate your self from it. On a tiny island not so much.

Really? Then you live in a bad area. You have the option to move. I've been in Joisey for 40+ years. I don't think I've ever heard about some one being shot and killed on their way to the beach like the Coki beach shooting almost 3 years ago. Look up all the homicides on STT alone and let me know how it compares to where you live. Besides, I'll bet where you're from the police do their jobs and put away criminals for a long, long time. They don't look the other way even if they do know the suspects.
