I am moving to St Croix to join my husband whom is working at Hovensa with a sub contractor. I am a RN with experience in ICU, radiology and cardiac cath. My question is would I be better off to get on traveling status before I move and if so with whom? Also any suggestions on whom to contact for employment would be welcome. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks Julie

Contact Ms. Hannifer Brittain, Nurse recruiter at the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix, 778-6311.

The hospital would rather hire you directly than work through a traveling agency. It is far less expensive for them, although the compensation level to you is about the same. The difference being the fees a traveling nurse agency charges.

Unlike other employment opprtunities, Ms. Brittain is pretty good about returning calls from prospective nurses. Like any other hospital, the Juan F. Luis Hospital has a problem with the nursing shortage that is currentlt plauging healthcare.

Julie: With the new Cardiac Center and with the chronic shortage of ICU nurses, you should have no trouble. If you are planning on staying on St Croix, a small word of advice. If you come on as a traveler, you will find that the other employees are not as receptive to you. If you are hired directly by the hospital, you will have additional gravitas.

Dear RN moving to STX,
The nursing licensure for the islands is not as easy for reciprocity as it is in most states. They seem to require bits and pieces of "other" info. I suggest you might get on the web for the VI Board of Nursing and get the licensing forms so you can gather the things you need before you leave the state you are licensed in. Even for licensure, for example, you need references (two I think) of current employers. Also a criminal background clearance (which is easily accomplished in the states),and I fail to remember what other bits and pieces that are different. Good luck. Irene and Max

Julie,
I just got my VI nursing license (and it wasn't that difficult) and just got a job through an agency that has done an exceptional job for me. If you want to discuss further, please feel free to call me at 918-766-2080 or you can email me at melissalsutton@yahoo.com.
