Relocating to STT this fall

Hi, I'm a 22 year old jewelry design major looking to move to STT this September. I will be moving with about $5,000. Does this seem like enough to get started down there with? Also, I have a pretty decent car, it has 122,000 miles on it but runs well. Should I ship it? I'm concerned about the price of shipping it, it would cut into funds for the rest of the move. If I move somewhere in town will I be able to get most business done on foot?

Thanks,
Speedwell

It seems kind of low & if you search on here for threads about shipping cars, it will give you some prices. A foreign-made car costs more than an American made vehicle a bit. You could start off by staying in a place like Ronnie's (who's a poster here.) It's in town.

Have you been here before? If you're not going to do a pre-move visit, make sure you have enough to get back home. With Ronnie's place, utilities are included so you save on deposits right there until you're situated. Most apartments will require first/last & possibly a security deposit which eats up money fast. Good luck!

I have visited St. Thomas earlier this year, it wasn't exactly a pmv though. Would it be better to get a moped scooter on the island instead of shipping a car? I have friends who were considering this option before moving themselves.

$5000 is probably not enough. Use search function for more details.

Will you have graduated when you move here? Do you plan to work here? If so, what type of job are you hoping to find?

$5,000 seems insufficient to get started down here. I would advise against shipping a car with 122,000 miles on it. If you move somewhere in town, by which I'm guessing you mean Charlotte Amalie, you will not be able to get most business done on foot. For example, there is no grocery store within walking distance of downtown. Riding a moped here is extremely dangerous, so if you choose to do so please be sure you register at the VI Motor Vehicle Bureau as an organ donor. You would have much greater odds of success if you saved $10,000, bought a used car when you got here, and lived somewhere other than downtown (like the east end.)
