My family and I are relocating to STX sometime next summer. Is the VI Relocation kit useful . It seems like these forums have a lot of the information and suggestions that we need. I guess what I'm asking is..What exactly is in the Relocation Kit? We've been to the island twice in the last 4 yrs. I know it's not much, but I'd rather not pay for something that we don't really need. Thanks!

Forget about a relocation kit. Do a PMV and live here for as long as possible before you commit. At least a month or two.
Does the relocation kit come with rose colored glasses?

The Settlers Handbook is very helpful, lots of info, addresses, phone numbers, etc. All in all I suggest going ahead and getting the kit.

Here's the links for the various books: http://www.vitraders.com/category/relocation.html

You're going to spend a lot more than $20 to move here and if you decide you can't handle life in the tropics, more to get back where you moved from. Buy the book.

Do a PMV! Reading a book is not the same. I mean really? I'm glad you were given a heads up coming here was more expensive than a book. I bet you didn't know that.
O.K. Read a book, spend between 10 and 15k moving here to find out you can't deal with all you have to do without.

Thanks for the suggestions. My husband is actually doing a PMV in April when his parents will be there on vacation. His employer owns a condo in Gentle Winds so all of the CEO's (my father in-law) and family get 2 weeks a year for free. He's been going there for 30+years so he's pretty knowledgeable about the island and has obviously shared what he knows with us. I think I'll go ahead and order a book/kit since we'll be need specific information regarding banking, insurance, etc Thanks again for the input

Does the map in the Relocation Kit, list area names?

Reading some of the stories online from people who have moved they said that it was difficult navigating at first even with a map because the map didn't list area names and most locals gave directions based on area names rather than road numbers or addresses. I know this seems to be the case looking on craigslist for apartments and houses for rent.

This looks great. Would you have one for STT?
