I am planning to move to St thomas in the middle of feb. and was told to check out the east side of the island (ie cowpet bay). Is there much availability in this area for housing and jobs? I would be looking for a cheap room, plus restaurant/ hotel work. Do many or any hotels offer housing for employees (that might be cheap)?
It was suggested that I might talk to a real estate agent before arriving to get a jump on finding housing- is this a worthwhile idea and is there one to be recommended? Thanks for you time and please feel free to include any other relevant information I might need in relocating!

Cathrynh,

The Northside is a good place to move, it's kind of a rain forest and gets the tradewinds, there are no apartments like there is in the states per-say, but there are apartments usually added on to people's houses, what I did when I moved there was get a hotel for the first few days on was on the Island and check the local paper for a rental it took me about two days to find a place to live and vehicle. As far as employment timing is everything getting there just before tourist season is in full swing, and the good jobs are filled. Good luck to you.

Cheers.

And there is really no such thing as "cheap" housing here. The only hotels/resorts that offer free housing to their employees would be timeshare resorts (but only for 30 days) and if your position was high enough up the foodchain, you might be able to talk them into giving you housing. But you'd have to be pretty high up. My friend was the construction supervisor at the Ritz, so he had it. Maybe the General Manager on up?

Your best bet is to get here and pick up an Island Trader then start calling. The apartments and cars seem to change on a weekly basis. You can call the Daily News and ask for the Circulation ept. and they will mail you a Trader for $4.
