Hello,

My Girlfriend are planning to move to st Thomas, in july. She will be atttending Grad school at UVI and i'm comming along because im done with winters in New England. We have been doing our research and have decided on a short term rental when we first get there, so that then we can look for an apartment near the University.

My question is, is the apartments down near the university, any worse then others around the island, the reason i ask is because i am currently in school and my apartment was not that hot since is was a "college apartment" and do any of you think a short term is a good idea to start?

thanks for your time!
Jon

Hello John,

Short term is a good idea since apartments vary greatly so you want to see them in person before signing a lease; also some landlords aren't to pressed to rent to someone they haven't seen in person. So yes - stay in a short term rental or small hotel/B&B for a few nights/weeks while finding an apartment.

There are no 'college apartments' around UVI.

Just for reference, if I drew a box around UVI, the ocean is on one side, forested land on two sides and a couple neighborhoods on the 4th side. Its not surrounded by college town type things (no coffee shops, fast food, video rentals, college student apartments, bars...). You can drive/take the bus a short distance to those things though.

For finding an apartment close to the university you might look in the north/west end of the island. The apartments would be just like anywhere else.

That is pretty much what I had figured, we did get a short term rental set up and our plan leaves Logan international Airport in boston on July 25 at 8 am!!!!! I can not wait to get down there! Also are there any stores like Best Buy down there, since i work at one up here i might be able to get transfered down there to keep my job, but i dont want to mention it to my boss until i know.!!! thanks for all the help!!! Hope there are some nice Apts when i get there and some cheap cars or trucks i can look at to buy!!

Pick up an Island Trader when you get here and you will be able to call on lots of apartments, as well as trucks.

No Best Buy store here., sorry.

Jon,

Sales jobs. Go around town and talk to the stores.

A guy staying at the place I am now with no jewlery experience and no sales experience just got a job at Diamonds International down the street.

For electronics talk to Ackley Communications www.ackleycomm.com (i think) they are the only company here providing good internet connections.

My Main concern is that i will move down there and then be unable to locate work. Does this happen often or is there always jobs someplace? I prolly will be willing to do anything while i am down there just to live!
