So a few of you have encouraged me to rent the first few years we come down after retirement to spend winter months...this is sounding appealing. Where can I find listings of rentals that are not expensive vacation rentals?

For St. Croix, this site is about as good as most, and on the Classified forum you can post what you are looking for. Craigslist is also good. Our local paper isn't online. You can always contact local Realtors. There are several on this forum and they may contact you.

When are you coming? How large do you want? I have a small apartment complex.. http://www.virginislandsrentals.com, I offer small or large apts., short term or long term, all furnished.

If you would like more info, just send me a PM or email casita37@hotmail.com.

Good luck to you. Renting first is a good idea.

Bettyboop,

From your prior thread I take it that you haven't decided which island...

I recommend St. Thomas 🙂

Without getting into a big discussion of which island is "better" (there's no right or wrong answer of course), let me just say that my main reason for liking STT is is proximity to SO many other islands. My view is of ~20 islands and I could take a ferry to several of them very easily if I so choose. There are other reasons of course, but that is why I like STT. STJ has the same views and proximity but STJ is very expensive and has fewer amenities. I go to STJ when I need a vacation 😀

Anyway, here are some suggestions for locating a long term rental on STT:

1. Keep an eye on the classifieds in the Daily News and Island Trader
2. Call various realtors. Many (most?) also broker long term rentals.

When I moved I wanted to rent for a while before building or buying. I looked at many places culled from ads in the paper but ultimately went with a wonderful condo that was rented by a realtor's office (Calypso). As soon as I saw it I knew it was what I wanted. All of the other places were just OK-- all had issues for me.

In this down market you might even be able to swing a long-term rental from a house listed for sale on MLS. If there is not much activity/interest in a house, perhaps the seller would entertain an offer to rent for 6 months.

Some realtor websites:

http://www.calypsorealty.com/ Click on "Long term rental info" on the left for a list of all of their rentals; pictures, costs, and rental status are all displayed on their website.

http://www.currerirealtors.vi/ Their website doesn't have rentals but the realtors likely have some rentals to offer. I used Mucki Wesley twice for real estate transactions and can recommend her.

http://www.virealsolutions.com/web/long-term-rentals They currently have a handful of rentals on their site.

http://www.realestatecenter.vi/rentals.html Their website has a "rentals" page but it just tells you to contact them.

http://www.usvi-realestate.com/ John Foster Real Estate. No rentals listed on their site but I know that their realtors sometimes assist with or know of rentals.

http://www.jackiemarin.com/ Has a rentals page.

http://www.seaglassproperties.com/

http://www.marshamaynes.com/Nav.aspx/Page=/About/Default.aspx

http://www.aprilnewland.com/

http://www.davidjones.vi/

This is not a complete list of STT realtors.

PM me if you need further info.

First, thanks Jules for linking me on this site. I am the co-owner of Real Solutions Real Estate, along with Cara Hinton.

Betty- I also advise people to rent their first year, or at least six months. I don't say that with regard to finding the right house. It is more related to deciding which part of the island you want to live on. Some people prefer the Northside, others the East End, others the South. They all really have different things to offer.

As for which island, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I moved to St. John before moving to St. Thomas where I have been for about five years. I love both islands in different ways. I have also been to St. Croix more than a dozen times and think it has some great things to offer. But if I had to choose one for living, I would choose St. Thomas. For vacation, I would choose St. John. I just like the boating and surrounding cays, along with the proximity to the BVI, as a huge advantage to STT and STJ.

Good luck, the VI is a very special place and I can't imagine living anywhere else.

Sincerely,

Kirk
