Restaurant job offer on St. Thomas

Hi everyone,

I have been offered a job as the Executive Chef at a restaurant on St. Thomas near Red Hook. The name of the place is the "Buddha Bar Sushi Lounge." Has anyone heard of it, or more importantly been there? Do you have any comments on the food quality, cleanliness, service, etc? The guy who owns the place seems on the level, but in doing some research I haven't been able to find a thing about it on sites such as these. I'm planning on coming down for a PMV in a week or so, but these days it just makes sense to do as much research as you can.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin

Ahh the Buddha Bar. Couldn't tell you about the food, but it was definitely the place to be on the Saturday before Halloween. GREAT costume party along with a good band (the same one played Off Shore on Monday night). I wish I could tell you more about the day-to-day operations, but that's the only time I've been. The decor was nice and I have been told that the food is good as well.

The food is OK, though nothing to rave about. For sushi, Beni Iguana's wins, hands down. Last time I was in Buddha, nearly EVERYONE had brought their own "Iguana Sauce" from Beni's! Haha!

Hi,

As an Executive Chef who recently left the island (last week) I can tell you that working in a island restaurant is NOTHING like a stateside place. I am not saying that is a bad thing. Just be careful WHO you work for. If doing your own laundry for your chef jackets and kitchen towels doesn't faze you, you will fit in. If not finding competent kitchen help doesn't faze you, you'll fit right in. If working 7 days a week, 12-16 hours a day is what you are all about, you'll fit right in. I spent 9 months in a restaurant down there and never had the chance to experience the islands........ due to no fault of my own. All I am saying is be careful. Owners will promise you the world...........

Hell, I am faced with most of those scenarios now. Except for having to wash my own sh#*. I live and work in Vegas, so long hours are nothing new. I was hoping to get back to a normal set of hours. The owner told me they're closed on Monday and they generally work 6 to 8 hours a day....but being the chef always means more stuff to do. I guess we'll just see. Burned out, how was getting most of the product needed to operate on a consistent daily basis? Easy to order? Did you end up 86'ing a lot of items due to lack of readily available product? That will be a shock coming from a 24-hour city like Vegas. If I want/need something I just pick up the phone or ask our purchaser.

Anyone else been there?

Martin

The Buddha Bar..... it's not the Ritz but I'm certain it will be an adventure.

I drove by the Buddha bar abut an hour ago, its of decent size as far as island restraunts go and it had a good turn out, lots of cars pulling into the parking lot. Its in a very popular area. I'm not one for gooing into questionable places, this one is on my list to try out, looks fun!

I love the Buddha Bar. Patrick and Luke are awesome. Larry the sushi chef is wonderful, and a really sweet guy! The whole staff is full of wonderful people. You will have a blast working there. The staff also hangs out alot, and will help show you the island. Take the job!

Full Moon Parties at Buddha are Fun Too!!

I was suprised the first time I walked into Buddha Bar to find out how nice it was on the inside. The new guy Larry has done a great job since he has been there. If you are a Sushi fantatic you will not be blown away by anything offered on the Island as of yet. So anything you can contribute I would look forward to.

Patrick has been great, and my girlfriend and I can't wait to finally get down there. Just started selling our stuff. No PMV, just clothes and $$$. Hopefully we'll arrive the first week of December. Come by and introduce yourselves.
