Hey guys! I just skimmed your board and am so impressed with the community you have established here. Feels very comfortable and supportive... cheers!

I'm writing this morning to cast a net of hope out to any reading STT locals. I'm 22 and two months away from graduating with a bachelors degree in English and want more than anything to return to St. Thomas to work. I say "return" because I lived there from Aug '02 to May '03 when I was on student exchange at the university. Had the TIME of my life and feel that if I don't move back soon, I won't get the chance again. I have to work at home this summer to make $$ for the move, but will spring at the chance to relocate come fall.

I have friends down there, but they're still going to be in school and therefore out of touch with the work world. I am also a certified Pilates instructor! I know I could waitress/hostess at any of the restaurants, but I'm looking for something a little more substantial. I remember checking the Trader every week for jobs/apts... but since I'm back in MD, I have no access to that info. I guess what I'm asking is - does anyone know of any teaching/writing/professional jobs or decent apts. on the West/North side?! Anyone need a personal secretary/assistant/helper/motivator? Any suggestions?

sorry this is such a sweepingly broad and general request for help!
I will appreciate any response at all. THANK you!!
🙂 Suzie

Hello Suzie,

Welcome to the board!!

Your post isn't broad at all, feel free to ask your questions about moving/living in the USVI as they come up. As for what you are currently asking - With your English Degree I would suggest teaching - try the public and private school system. Under Employment on this web site there are links to the Dept. Of Education and under Schools there are links to private schoools - so that should give you a place to start.

Pilates instructor - contact the various gyms both private and at hotels. Check the yellow pages for list and numbers http://www.viphonebook.com - call and find out who you need to talk to about jobs, fax your resume... if you get a good response over the phone great if not fax your resume and follow up once you get here. (Some businesses are hesitant about spending time talking to employees who aren't yet on island.)

For writing - did you take any reporting classes?? Maybe the Daily News - if not a reporter then definatly with an English Degree you could try getting a job as a copy editor. Visit the Daily News at http://www.virginislandsdailynews.com You can contact them from home, fax resume ect and might have better luck getting something while not yet on island.

Good Luck.

I teach pilates here in St. John and had also in St Thomas. You may already be here on island right now. I know Gold's Gym in Extreme Fitness and America's Paradise (which has 2 location) needs instructors.
email me with any questions.

Hello Suzie, I will be transfering to the university in January and I'm so glad to hear you had the time of your life. I am probobly in the same boat as you were a few year's ago. I would love to talk with you about your experiences and hear any advice you have. Where are you from? I'm guessing Australia from the "cheers" but I may be wrong. I am a children's yoga instructor from San Diego and about to study Psychology. I would love to get in touch with anyone attending the University now to talk with also. Thanks and good luck! Elise
