retiring and buying a business

I will be moving to STX as soon as I sell my business in Calif. I am looking to buy an existing laundry business and will have a local (transplant) as my business partner. I am looking for advice and information.
Is it easy to start a business as a sole propriotor (the mechanics of opening a business). Where are corps. registered? I have experience running a private practice. I am retiring to the islands and hope to run the laundry as my "pension". Any advice from transplants that have done the same thing? Where can I find out about the tax/economic advantages that are now currently available? Thank you in advance!

Also, Have you checked the home page of this website? It has a section on business and in that section are links to the Liscensing website and the EDC website. The oppurtunities are all still currently available for business owners. The Chamber of Commerce on StX seems to be active and could be a good on island resource as well. I also know that you can hire an agency to do all the paperwork for establishing your business. I think I will go this route because they will know the paths to take and the short cuts in processing all the paperwork. It does seem to be a little more complicated than when I openned up my business in the state of Ohio. That was a phone call and like, two forms to fill out for my venders licsense and Tax Id number (and you could open up while paperwork was being processed). In StX, you can not do business until all the licsensing has been completed, therefore I think the best is to use the resources available to make the process quicker and less painful...

Hi Manny,
Here is a website for finding info you'll need. www.viphonebook.com This contains the white and yellow pages for the USVI. Your best bet, 'cause I'm not sure of the individual business names myself, is to look up the Chamber of Commerce and call. Ask for reputable business to help with your business questions and you should get good info. My husband and I just had a three hour conf. yesterday with our lawyer here in Ohio. He is going to travel to the VI, to unofficially act as our lawyer and read through all the contracts for the big move. We have many things going that will bust open soon. Yikes! We're lucking out there!
