Hi all, in need of friendly advice. I have been offered a travel ass. for 13 week in stt. I am very excited, but a bit nervous. My housing will be provided, but I have questions about just every day life. Like should I ship my car over or rent one on the island. My daughter is 10 and wants to come, that means 2moths of school. I have looked at the private schools, and way to much for what I will be making. how do people get around. Car, bus taxi, scooter, bikes??? With a full furnished apt lined up, what do I need. I mean other than a bathing suite, sun screen and scrubs for the job. What do I need to make sure my daughter sees. She has traveled but never this length of time. Is the island safe. Will it be OK for my sitter and daughter to venture out to discover the island. I love the whole laid back way of life and We are so excited about our new adventure, but I hope I am not going into this with stars in my eyes. I need some real hard core facts about what to expect,
Thanks so much...and I will keep you all up dated about the move. As to date it look slike July 1.

A car is pretty important here. Bikes and scooters aren't feasible and taxis quickly become cost prohibitive. For thirteen weeks it doesn't make sense to ship a car. It would be cheapest, but admittedly a hassle, to buy a car and then sell it before you leave. Alternatively you can check the rates at the local rental places; their phone numbers can be found here: www.viphonebook.com

I don't know your daughter but at ten years of age she may not feel comfortable in a local public school. Perhaps you can obtain the books from your local school in the states and she can study with her sitter while she's here.

It sounds like you have never been here. Life here is not "laid back." Your safety depends in large part on where you spend your time when it's dark. Not much good happens here after dark.

Hi Toomara
I am currently a travel RN here in St. Thomas. I live at Sapphire Village. I currently don't have a car but I would highly recommend it. It will cost you approx $600 per month to lease a car. I have been taking the safari taxi too and from work and it cost $4 roundtrip but it is a hassle at times. Do you know what shift you will be working? I work days and the safari taxi's quit running around 7:30pm so you would need to get a private taxi if you get out late from work. The taxi drivers here will rip you off and charge approx $20 one way per person. It is generally safe during the day, but at night I don't recommend being out. If you have any other questions, please feel free to write or email.

Thanks,
Misty
