Roaming or local pre-pay?

I have a tri-band mobile phone. I live in Europe and have roaming, but it's expensive when I go abroad. When I go to Africa, I just change SIM cards. When I go to the US mainland for more than a few weeks, I buy a pre-paid TracFone. Any recommendations for when I arrive in USVI for a 3-week stay in January?

USVI is just like the us except we are limited on our cell phone providers here. We have sprint/nextel and cingular/att. I don't know which prepaid cell phones work here but pre paid phone cards you would buy for the us work here fine.
