Sales tax on cars?

OK, if we were to purchase a vechicle a few weeks before our move to the islands, and did not register it in the States (thus not paying sales tax) and then shipped it over, it seems we would avoid paying any sales tax (as there is none in the USVI). Any one else do this? Anyone know if there are any issues with registering a vehicle in STT with an "out of state - assigned" title? Every little bit helps...

Ypou could also avoid paying sales tax by purchasing it here...plus you wouldn't have to pay the extra shipping expense.

You should talk to the shipping company, as I wouldn't think that they would allow an unregistered car on the boat.

HMMMMMM....i lived in STX and when I had a vehicle shipped to the island from the US, they charged me a tax (can't remember what it was called)...EVEN though, tax was paid on the vehicle already. They are considered a FORIEGN PORT OF ENTRY, even though they are a US territory. Seemed to me that the USVI is ONLY part of the US when they need US money.

Hello SPW,

When you bring in a car you pay:

Road Tax

Personal Use Tax

Customs is paid if the car is not a US car.

Any of those sound familiar?
