Thought I'd start a forum about diving on St Croix and see where it leads us.

I'm often in need of "viz" reports (visibility) in making my decision where and when to dive, so if this forum can stay active, I'd appreciate hearing your viz reports.

Occasionally one of the dive shops has a special offer I'd like to hear about or share. One of my favorites is Scuba's "repositioning" dive when they have to take one of their boats from Csted around Ham's Bluff. Done it twice and looking forward to the next time. Info about other shop's special dives would be appreciated.

-------------------------------------

Had a wonderful dive today (1/7/11) here on St Croix at Salt River Canyon.
After weeks of bad weather and poor visibility, we had 100 ft viz and calm conditions.

Was also happy to meet for the first time "Edward" from these boards -who was on the same dive. Hi Edward!

Hi, Neil! Today was incredible. I'm glad I had the 3 1/2 mil wetsuit, though. I'd done 36 dives without a wetsuit, when the water was 86F. A bit cooler in the winter, but still manageable.

As Neil mentioned, we did Salt River Canyon. As usual, I went deeper than I had intended, to 110 feet, but I couldn't help myself. The second dive was at Japanese Garden. Lots of fish. Simeon speared two small lionfish. Neil saw a big shark. We all saw a beautiful spotted ray.

Wish I could have gone with you Edward.
Instead, I went kayaking along Ham's Bluff.

I'd love to dive along this coast someday and explore it more underwater.
On a calm day with a small motorboat it would be an awesome snorkeling trip too.
There are some coves you can get into/behind on really calm days like this morning.

I took this photo this morning from one of the hidden inlets just west of Annaly Bay.
You can only see the cave if you slip into the narrow pass to the shore.
The waves moving in and out of the cave make a booming sound.

Below is another photo of some of the dramatic coastline as seen from my kayak this am, --this one shot from another one of those hidden little inlets.

It's calling us to dive it.

Jumped on Scuba Duo this morning for a repositioning ride/dive from Csted to Fsted (operated by SCUBA).
We dove Davis Bay (west of Carambola beach along NW coast) and it was really an exciting dive.

The reef "Wall" there is varied and has big corals, fans and whips hanging off of it. Coral-lined sand bottom chutes and valleys tumble down from the coastal clifs.

Definitely one of my new favorites.
