At the risk of sounding stupid, I just wanted to ask if there is a military presence on the island? I am currently associated with the military and it's just sort of a "cushion" for me.

We have the Coast Guard and the National Guard, that I am aware of.

We also at most times have a handful of Federal Marshalls on island for various reasons.

On St. Croix, we have the National Guard, Coast Guard, and a Navy radar station.
