OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!

"Through 2016, any long-time V.I. Government employee will be able to take two years off work, with the government paying full health insurance and pension contributions for the jobs that are not being performed, if an amendment the Senate approved without debate Thursday becomes law."

"Hansen's amendment has no relation to the subject of the bill, which is how many hours retirees may work while receiving their pensions. It makes the terms of an emergency budget act passed in 2011 more generous and obligates the government to pay health insurance and pension contributions for people who are not actually working for the government."

read the entire depressing article and see how our money is WASTED!

WOW is all that can be said...welcome to "America's Government Employee's Welfare Paradise"!

I really get that warm fuzzy feeling that our government employees will be fully taken care of for their lives...how nice for them.

As a friend says: "It makes my head want to explode!"

Do these senators, especially Chucky, have absolutely no sense of fiscal responsibility?
She's pandering for votes for the next election.

As for the gist of the bill...It is more expensive to bring them back to work.

Yes, and it makes sense to pay our senators California salaries! And benefits.

We need more referendums, not just the ones that the senators like!

That's why the people love (and vote for) Chucky. She's like Robin Hood.

Here is an updated article:

http://stthomassource.com/content/news/local-news/2013/09/27/senate-reaffirms-support-government-leave-benefits

It should be noted that those who qualify for this do NOT get paid their salaries and there are, according to Senator Malone, currently only four government employees eligible. I don't know enough about it to have a firm opinion but it doesn't seen entirely illogical when you look at the whole picture.

Excerpts from STT Source Editorial:

"Hansen's amendment extends this automatic two-year leave with government-paid benefits until Oct. 1, 2016, and creates an obligation for the government to pay an unknown amount in employer and employee health and pension contributions for employees who are not actually performing any work. It also requires the government to pay not just the employer contribution for health insurance and retirement pensions, but also the employees' own contributions."

"At Hansen's behest, the Senate continues to use the General Fund as a gift bag to dole out benefits to placate a group of potential voters and ignore the harsh realities of the territory's economic misery."

"No one even attempted to explain why government workers deserve such an unparalleled benefit. We respect government workers, who do hard jobs and mostly do them well. But the Senate's action seems inexplicable when other workers are struggling just to get and hold jobs, and many more can't even find one. If you – a store clerk or a dental hygienist or a legal secretary, for instance, or, let's just say it, a news editor or reporter – wanted or needed to take two years off of work, would you expect your employer to continue paying your benefits and hold employment open for you until you returned? If you asked, can you imagine your boss's reaction? Would the boss laugh or throw you out on your ear?"
