Good morning! Trade's recent post on the automobile registration topic indicated a senior discount. I arrive in STT in 10 days. Are there any other senior discounts I should know about? (I'm 72 years young.) Thanks!

You have to get the official senior ID which is good for 5 years. Just being old doesn't usually qualify you. When it expires you need to renew it. It costs $5.00 if I remember correctly. You get it at the complex behind Lionel Roberts stadium in Hospital Ground if you know where the old hospital is. You can ride the ferry to STJ much cheaper (haven't had a chance to do that with the card yet but I think it's like 1 or 2 $), You get a discount at Four Seasons market which started out a 15% off but I think it's been lowered to 10%, plus you get a discount at Western Auto, maybe Pueblo but I seldom go there, maybe Plaza Extra but I seldom go there either & another place that I can't remember but they give you a paper with the places that offer it. Half price for the car stickers makes it REALLY worth it.

It cracks me up that you have to renew it. It's not like you're getting younger in 5 years but I suppose it helps pay the salaries of those who issue it. They are very nice ladies in that office, by the way. I think the age requirement is 60.

Oh, you might get cheaper bus fares too but I don't ride the buses.

On St. Croix you can get a 5% discount at Plaza with a Military ID or a AARP card for purchases over $20. I don't think it includes liquor or tobacco products. Ask for the discount and show the card after they have rung everything up to receive the 5% off.

Trade: I have always wondered why a visitor didn't file suit on this, especially on the ferry. If it is a discount for those over 60, there should not be discrimination based on where you reside.

(Stir the pot a little...)

Well, I couldn't get the discount unless I applied for & got the Senior card & I live here. So technically they're only giving discounts to those with the cards in much the same was as any 50 year old could squawk about not getting an AARP discound if they don't belong to AARP.

Here in the states, if you press it you can get the discount at any age. It's discrimination of they don't give it to you.

One used get a 5% discount on gas at Shuama in Sunny Isles in STX. Don't know if they still do.(they also did discounts for fishermen and taxi drivers). Does anyone know if the police get gas discounts? Just curious.

in stt you get a discount at the movies (I think you pay 4.50) and for the ferry ride to St. John.

There are not many places that accept the card. But it is a very nice picture. You need to go to social services in the hospital ground. This is not by the hospital but back by the ball park.

I believe that the territorial government pays for gas for all those government tagged vehicles. No need for a discount! 😉

The clerks at Gallows Bay Hardware always asks if I have a GBH or senior card, but they can never tell me how to get either one.

Even so, they give me a 5% discount based on the age on my driver's license.

So where on STX can one reliably get a senior card?

I'm not a senior, but I ask for a discount pretty much everywhere I do business. I get it often enough to make it worth asking. Even where they don't give it to me, they often tell me when and how I can save money, e.g. "Mark downs are coming on Tuesday--come late morning."

Best,

The white government building that is on a side street accross the from McDonalds & Subway in Golden Rock. Heading south on this street only a few feet going toward the ocean on the right is a big white building. Pull in the 1st parking entrance (right) and go to the human services office on the lower level (east end of the building). You'll need 2 forms of photo ID and costs $5.00. Then you take your receipt to door 107 and have your picture taken. There they ask you bunch of questions and take your picture --issuing you a photo ID VI Seniors card. Lots of luck on being able to do this in 1 trip - it took my wife & I two trips because the photo person wasn't there the afternoon we went 1st time.

The legal Human Services ID gives you discounts on the St John ferry (don't know if it works on the St Thomas/St Croix one), allows you go to the front of the line at BMV, many other government perks. Also, small discounts at grocery stores, etc.

Hubby and I were in Golden Rock Pharmacy last week buying OTC stuff. Hubby paid while I was still shopping, so as he was getting his change, I asked if he asked for his senior discount. OMG...you would think I had said the sky was falling. The clerk started in about she couldn't do it now (before we even asked her to adjust it), said it would mess up her register. So I asked if we could just return it and buy it again. That really sent her into a tizzy. NO NO NO..."they" would yell at her! So, we left and before we drove off, I got mad! I grabbed the bag, went back into the store, straight to the prescription counter and asked for the manager. He, very politely, refunded my money, no questions asked. I then told him why I was returning it and that we would go elsewhere from now on, where they appreciated seniors and understood that by definition seniors FORGET things! He hardly responded at all. I don't think he spoke English. LOL

For your senior card you need your SS card.

Actually 60, for the official senior card, unless it has changed in the last couple of years.

Success!

I found the office.

Bruce was very friendly and professional. He did ask for a Social Security card (which I haven't carried for nearly 60 years), but he accepted my passport, driving license, military ID card and Medicare card.

Better to have SS card but not essential.

$5 dollars and 10 minutes later, I had my card. Many of my expenses have just decreased by 5 percent!

🙂

Edward: Whenever you deal with any VI government office, flash your golden oldie card. You may get moved to the front of the line or get a nice discount on fees.;)
