Septic maintenance on STT?

Can anyone recommend a septic maintenance company on STT? Also, what should I expect to pay approximately for an annual cleaning and for regular maintenance services? Finally, I'd appreciate any septic use tips that anyone has.

Thanks,

Islandlola

I don't have any personal knowledge of their work, but you gotta love Lew Henley's motto: " #1 in a #2 business!"

Yeah, I found that pretty cute, too. I have seen their trucks most often, so that was the first thing I looked up. If anyone has used Lew Henley or others in the septic (make that #2) business, I'd love to hear about your experience.

Just a question out of sheer curiosity and maybe it's stupid but why are you looking? Really, I'm just curious.

I'm aware that some high-volume commercial properties sometimes have problems and probably do undergo regular maintenance but in all my years here and living in many different areas, I've never had a septic tank problem. My present neighbour has added rental units to his property over the years and last year, because of added volume, had a problem which necessitated a complete dig-out and replacement but that's about it. Cheers!

Hi:

Most septics I'm familiar with need periodic maintenance such as power washing, pumping out, etc. The need is even more acute if the contents have solidified and/or are close to filling the tank.

islandlola: that's what I'm confused about. I've been in my present location for 12 years, was in the previous for 10 years and it's never been an issue, nor have any of my friends had need of such maintenance. Maybe the systems you're talking about are stateside and work differently. Possibly a different terrain poses problems?

I just don't want to see you wasting money if it's not necessary. Cheers.

Granted, we have only owned our home for 2 1/2 years, but in that time we have never had our septic tank serviced. We have had to put in the toilets this grainy stuff that you buy at Home Depot at least 2 or 3 times. You can tell it is time to reapply b/c the toilets don't flush or drain as well.

I'm with STT Res., don't spend the money unless you know your septic requires special maintenance.

STT and Onika:

Thanks for your replies. You're right; though I've *used* lots of septics both stateside and in the VI's, I've only experienced maintenance stateside. Some of the replies I've gotten from folks on the island regarding the need for regular care have so far varied greatly. So, based on all of these comments and a chat with the folks at Lew Henley (they were great on the phone and gave lots of useful info for me to assess whether I needed service), I'll just have my plumber pop the top off and we'll all have a look inside (we had the exterior inspected previously). Fun, fun--a septic viewing party! Unless there is some pressing problem I'll ignore it for now.

Best,
