Is there a flat fee in addition to all of the other fees (inspection, taxes, registration, customs) for shipping the car or is that taken care of when I pay for it to go through customs?

You have to arrange shipping with a company whether you have to pre-pay or C.O.D. I don't know. Cost from S Florida ports to VI is in the range of $800.00-$1,000.00 but if you are going to have the car trucked from somewhere to S Florida you will pay more. Tropical shipping ( www.tropical.com ) is the most obvious choice to ship a vehicle to VI. To have your car trucked to S Florida will likely cost an additional $500.00-$1,000.00

Whatever the cost may be it is entirely seperate from inspection, taxes, registration, customs costs

I just found a hub site -- http://www.automoving.com/ -- that lets you get an instant quote on auto shipping from a variety of locations or name your own shipping rate (a la Priceline.com). I will be shipping my Saturn SC1 3 door from Baltimore, MD to St. Croix. The quote they gave me online was $1800, which falls right into the range ParrotHead estimated. Never being one who walked away from a chance to bargain, I filled out the name your own rate form and asked if anyone could ship my car for $1400.

Will let you know what I hear back.

They do have a great shipping checklist on this site that's worth a look even if you don't end up using their quote service.

Parrothead...

Funny you should make that post -- this email just arrived:

"We can arrange for shipment of your vehicle, from the port in
Pennsauken, NJ to the port in ST. Croix, USVI, at the shipping
rate of $1,350.00.

Our rate includes transport, U.S. port fees, and U.S.
documentation, online tracking and online customer service. It
does not include marine insurance, customs entries, or port fees
in foreign ports. Please note that personal belongings may not
be shipped with your vehicle."

Getting closer to $1200 but New Jersey is a bit of haul from Baltimore. I suppose we should just drive up, drop the car off, and then spend the night in Atlantic City trying to win the rest of our moving costs and house down payment 🙂

I'll see what kind of counter offers they are willing to entertain.

HC -you're getting closer (cheaper) all the time. You might also check the car-train cost from DC to Orlando, then deliver your car to the port. I can tell ya how to fly cheap from Orlando thru San Juan ($74.00) then catch Carib Air from SJ to STT or STX for about $80.00

Parrothead,

I was talking about the option of the autotrain -- until the bombings of the railroads in Spain. Having lived in DC for the last seven years and experienced 9/11(I lived less than a mile from the Pentagon at that time and was at home when I heard the plane hit -- I had had the day from hell at work on 9/10 so I chose to sleep late on 9/11), I think I have to rule out train travel leaving DC so close to the November elections. I work in a high rise building two blocks from the White House and there is just no way that this gimp could evacuate DC through the traffic jams, etc. should the need arise -- on 9/11, most of my colleagues had to walk down M street ,through Georgetown and across the Key Brdige to the far side of Rosslyn before someone could pick them up -- they told me there was no way a wheelchair could have made it. For my own mental health, I need to stick with the airports, where they've at least put some resources into added security. After all, relieving the constant stress of living at the other ground zero is another reason I want to get the heck out of here.

I worked at 1776 F NW after I got out of the USAF in 1975. I was a research clerk & courier for a law firm. I know the area very well.

I think thats a great name. Hopefully we will all meet up one of these days. It would be fun to sit and talk. Besides all I'll have to do is call Mark and I'll have all the attention.

We'll be keeping you all in mind for anything that turns up. The one disappointing thing I've found out so far is there is no real land with the property. The lot next door to TBC is non-built up but its owned by a West Indian family that won't sell or build.

Eve,

Did I mention my hubby has a culinary degree, 10 years experience in managing a kitchen, planning menus, etc. AND he used to work for a software company that sold restaurant point-of-sale software that handled virtually all front and back of house paperwork needs? Send him an application right after you get one off to PH!
