I am shipping belongings to St Thomas from Houston in February. Does anyone have any experience w/ shipping an 18 foot powerboat on a trailer (TX title) & what kind of red tape to get it registered in usvi? Any import tax?
Any info welcome!

I recently bought a powerboat in Peurto Rico. The previous registration was in Virginia. I took notorized paperwork including the bill of sale from the bank that I bought it from to the DPNR and for less than a hundred dollars and about a half hour of time it was registered here. At this point there are no taxes on boats. I would assume with your Texas title it will be as simple as going in and regestering it here. As for the shipping on a trailer I havent' done it but it is done all the time here. You may want to consider taking down any bimini and shrink wrapping the boat to keep it cleaner.

You will be charged by the cubic foot. Highest point of the boat on the trailer to the ground, tip of trailer tongue to stern, etc. Based on a couple of boats we looked at shipping from NJ expect to pay $4K - $6K. This is why used boats are so expensive in the VI. Sellers are trying to recover all or part of the shipping cost.

We paid to ship our 23' twin-engine on a trailer out of Port Everglades about 18 months ago and it cost $3,500 to my driveway. Of course that was with Managed Freight which is no longer in business.
