We are looking to buy some appliances for our home here on STX and we were thinking it would probably be cheaper to purchase them at the Home Depot and have them shipped here...any insight anyone?
Would we be better off ordering from Puerto Rico? Anyone know of any inexpensive but reliable shipping companies to help us out.
All suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks!

The cargo boat that we usually use at work to ship from STT to STX, the Mary G, is "in the shop" right now. I don't know of another way to get things back and forth except USPS, FedEx and UPS. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

There is another, the Norma H. What puzzles me is that things are cheaper in St. Croix! You should price before buying in St. Thomas.
People buy cars over there and ship them here. Have checked some prices on appliances, looked good. Try Oscar's.

I get sooo confused. I thought the Norma H sailed from Puerto Rico.

It does a circuitous routeso to speak. SJ-STT-STX-STT-SJ. I got something on it that I bought at Wayne James Mahogany Auction in STX earlier this year. Was very easy.

Thank you Linda and Ronnie.
We haven't started looking just yet, we still have some time, but we were thinking the Home Depot might be the way to go. We have some friends who were looking at furniture and they suggested buying in Puerto Rico, and shipping. We'll do our best research first!!

Seriously, I'd wait until I got here before I buy ANYTHING. Two reasons. Until you get here you won't know what you need/want. And secondly, with people always coming and going, you can find real bargains at yard/leaving island sales.

Linda,

We already live here on STX, we've just purchased a home and are looking to fill it up. We've seen things like washers and dryers for sale in the moving sales, just not much for stoves and refrigerators. That's where the home depot thought came in. This website was so helpful when we did move here, I thought I'd give it a go for the appliances issue. Thanks for all your insight!!

If you have any military personnel in your family, you can also try the PX on St. Croix. They have the best appliances at the very lowest rates.

Is it possible to order items from the Home Depots on STT or PR via computer or phone and have it shipped to STX? It does not appear that Home Depot will ship directly to the USVIs and flying to STT or PR to buy a couple of items negates any cost savings and is not a particularly convenient way to shop either. While I am aware that there are freight companies that will handle the transport aspect, how do you get the stuff to the freight company in the first place? The items I am looking at cost about $200 at Home Depot and the closest comparable items here on STX that I have been able to find cost 2 to 3 times as much.

The new ferry, that there is talk of going into operation this fall, is capable of handling eleven tons of cargo. In the article in the paper they said they were trying to work out an arrangement with Home Depot for inter island delivery.

They also are talking about running this ferry year round.

It would be convenient, but I will believe it when the boat pulls up at the dock.

You can buy direct from PR at almost any home depot over there. They will cahrge $65 to truck it to the dock in SJ aka San Juan.

I have shipped tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise this way.

There is TAX! Shipping and maybe excise if you are over $1000.00 on the invoice. Make aure you include those into the "savings" calculation.

Warranty...... etc. Once you buy thats it. Unless you buy it from Western Auto and they are really not that far off on price.

Buy locally..... forget the Home Depot and all that. It will break. and the repair guys are nuts. Western pays for all that for a year or more if you set it up that way. Oscars too. Haggle if you like.
