Was sitting at the bar at Rowdy Joe's this afternoon, when someone from Rowdy's staff (don't know who) came in and told us some guy was around the corner outside the Corner Shop shooting his gun. We promptly closed and locked the main door and were told to "go in back" if the shooter came our way. Fortunately, nothing further developed.

Rowdy's called VIPD and they showed up within 15 or so minutes and began scouring the area for the shooter.

Pretty good response from Scott at Rowdy Joe's and the Police, considering there are not that many around. I would love to hear more on this subject, especially since I have a vested interest in that area. I'M still coming !!!

After the legislature approved the monies almost two years ago to put a mobile police substation in Cane Bay (accross from Off The Wall), still nothing done to put a police presence within a mile of several restaurants on the North Shore. All that has happened was a bunch of broken promises by the police dept and a couple of senators to do what they promised. The mobile substation is still sitting over at the police station (where you register cars) being used because the offices in the building have mold".

It's amazing the police got to Corner Store in 15 mins or less -- must have had a patrol car not that far away. If they come from the main station, it takes them at least 30 minutes, which is an eternity to wait if you have "the bad guys doing something". This has been the bone of contention for Rowdy Joes, The Corner Store, Off The Wall and the former Lobster Reef Cafe.

The police were ready to put the substation there last year, and then some property owners near the spot objected and the whole project was shelved. So, in this one case, not the fault of the police.

I have to respectfully tell you that the objection by a nearby property owner was nothing but a rumor. The land that was cleared had the landowner's permission. Somebody did however claim the site had a historical meaning and that was later dismissed by the police as not be credible. The fact remains the excuse given over and over again for months has been the one I listed (mold problem). To me any excuse - landowner, mold, whatever - there is no common sense excuse.
