Single mom, 10-yr-old, and cat moving to VI--ageism?

Hi ArmyWife,
I'm so glad I ran across your e-mail response. My husband wants to move our family to St. Croix for part of the year and I homeschool four of my children (ages 4, 6, 11, and 13). I must confess that I don't want to move away from friends, family and HS support groups but he suffers so much from allergies here in San Antonio, TX, that we have to do something. We have visited the USVI a few times so they are not totally foreign to us and my husband has a special love for the islands. He always feels better when he's down there. I've never been to St. Croix but my husband has been once and loved it.
Any helpful advice and reassurance you could give me would be appreciated. What ages are your kids? What curriculum do you use? We are a Christian family and I use Abeka materials mostly.
I've heard stories of crime in St. Croix, racial prejudice and lack of police intervention. I'm concerned for the safety of my family. What has been your experience in these areas and are you concerned about this?
As you can probably sense, I'm quite distressed about this possible move. Anything you can let me know would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Amy

Sorry. I'm not used to forums and did not realize this would post to everybody. I hope I have not offended any one. I just want more information from someone who homeschools and lives or has lived on St. Croix.

Amynepal -

You can use the "search" feature at the top of the main page to find out what's been posted recently about crime, schools, home schooling, etc.......but this particular thread is almost a year old - you might want to start a new thread with your personal concerns after doing a little poking around....info sort of changes from time to time.

Amy,

Please research carefully. Most residents who post on this forum would try to discourage you. You must research cost of living and the isolation issues. Search for postings from a woman named Theresa. She and her husband lived here for 2 years with 3 little children.

From the rough facts outlined in your post, I would say - do not even consider the move until you have been down for a look at the reality of Island living.
If you will miss your family and support system, have four young children and don't want to be there - DON'T GO!
I would talk to your allergist as well - the Caribbean can be very bad for allergies. You don't say how long yr husband was on island - what was in bloom then etc.

If you decide to move even part time - you will need a substantial amount of money. There are always hidden costs - helath care - trips home for family needs, food!!!!! and of course, the ever lovely WAPA!!.
