Hello All,
Just moved to STX and the first thing my wife and I need to purchase is decent snorkel gear. If anyone is knowledgable on the subject please respond to the following.

Where should we shop....reputable dealers that will take some time to help us

What brands should I look for?

What should I expect to spend for a good quality product?

Any tips on proper fit/sizing

Someone mentioned to definetly buy 'split fins' any thoughts?

Other than mask, snorkel, and fins should we purchase anything else?

Thank you all, I've lurked on this forum for many months and have found all the moving information very helpful.

Jim

Go to N2 Blue in the West end next to Coconuts. They also have a location in LaValle. Very nice people, tell them that Terry from AZ recommended them. They will take their time with you, and if you do dive, IMHO they are the best on the island. Small boat, so more personal attention.
Talk to them about Scuba Diving. Good dive mask and fins are better quality than snorkel gear, and you don't want to have to buy again later.
The split fins are nice. You get more push less effort. I would suggest fins that require booties. the nice thing about the booties is you can walk over rocks, hot roads, etc, and then just put on your fins to go snorkeling.

Don't go cheap on the mask it is the most important thing. Try on lots of them all faces are different. Seeing is more important then swimming fast save on flippers they all work for snorkeling, diving you might up grade them but your mask will be fine if you get a good one. N2 the Blue is a good place to go.

I agree. My mask is all important and it cost a lot but was worth it. I spent a bunch of money on fins too, but when I go snorkeling now, I get my mask, the snorkel and whichever fins I lay my hands on first in the big box 'o snorkel gear. I have yet to notice a difference between my original fins and any of the Kmart fins people have left at my house over the past two years.

Regarding fins, something else to consider is the strength in your legs. I got a a very expensive pair of split fins, shoes, the whole package. But the fins were very heavy and I actually had trouble kicking, both diving and snorkeling. I bought a pair of cheapo black fins from Big Beard and they work 100% better for me. The are softer and shorter, easier to move in the water.

My 2 cents.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations, my wife and I are now equipped and we took a hike over Goat Hill and did some snorkeling in Jack's Bay this weekend. If anyone has any favorite spots that are accessible without an SUV I'm all ears. Thanks again.
