So right now I am filling out a job application for St. Thomas...I am 21, about to graduate college, and have been checking out these boards for awhile after this job opportunity came up. It seems like a lot of people my age are moving down there...do they stay? Or is it just seasonal work? I always think of the islands having a lot of retired people and not a ton of 20-somethings...whats it like?

There are plenty of 20-somethings - especially during high season.

I'm 22 and I'm moving to the islands around march. I last visited St. John in September and there were still plenty of 20-somethings at that slow time of the year

do young people from the mainland only hang out with other young ppl from home? what about being friends with people who were born there? is there a big social divide, or is it really just whoever you chose to hang out with? it does seem like a lot of people on this board are moving down after they graduate, like i am thinking of doing...that is reassuring!

I'm 32 and just moved down here the end of July. There's plenty to do down here and lots of people to hang out with and have a good time. It just takes a little getting used to as things are somewhat different here.

seems to me that there are lots of 19-22yr olds here, either fresh out of college or trying to avoid college.... working at bars and stuff. my BF and i moved here and we're in our late 20s and we haven't met too many people "our age", seems like everyone is young or married with kids here (or retired). that's my 2 cents

I'm 22, I moved down here a month ago with 4 other guys all 22. There's tons of job opportunities and lots of cool people our age to hang out with. My advice is to not hem and haw about it too much and pick up and move. it's awesome

heh. the late 20'ers are around too-- they just tend to be the ones who are a little better hidden, as theyve settled themselves a little more, are less likely to hit *every* woodys happy hour, and may actually have real jobs.....

=)

yeah, I really have to blame myself about not meeting more people "my age" since i'm not the party animal i used to be... so i'm not out at the bars meeting enough folks

🙂

Hello Meg,

Many times it seems the new residents, particularly the younger ones 18-30, that are single, hang out together. I think it just happens that way; many times the early 20 something year olds work in restaurants/bars so if you are working with 5 or 6 other new residents its likely you will bond with them because you are in a similar situation of work environment and in being new to the island; you might end up being room-mates because your all looking for an apartment at the same time ect.

Making friends with folks that were born here is possiable. I think its easiest for those that are attending the university although even there the students from the states found each other and bonded while also making friends with locals and others. Outside of that environment you would meet locals at work - depending on the job. Less likely at bars, nightlife - but possiable.

There isn't a social divide in the true sense as in people don't want to be your friend because you aren't from here, but as mentioned it does seem to happen.

Hey everyone,
Glad I found these boards. I just turned 26 but hang out with people who are 21 and 30. My aunt currently live on St Thomas and my plan is to head down in a few weeks and then find a job and place to live for the high season till may-june.

I am coming from Maine and leaving the long cold winters behind!

I had planned to bring my car, but it doesnt seem worth the cost and hassle as I have found, then I thought motorcycle but seems to be the same process.

I had also planned to take few classes at the university since I am taking the semester off from college up here. Prob be heading down around the week of the 18th of december, anyone else planning on moving in the same time frame and where from?

I plan on working hard, playing hard and expieriencing as much as I can on the island. Water activities, night life, meeting new people and just having a great time. Plus I love the beach and the sun so that shouldn't hurt either!

Sean: my wife and I are 30 and 33 respectively and work hard and play hard too. I am a lawyer (former bartender for 8 years though in new york city). We love the beach and I love drinking beer with friends and hanging out and shooting the breeze til the wee hours. We hope to move in october to STT and are major concern at this point is also finding like minded people to hang with. Hope to meet you if you make it down there as well.

Pmcmanis,

It sounds like our situations are very similar. I'm planning on moving in the next 6 months with 2 other guys. My e-mail is brand79@gmail.com. I'd like to pick your brain if you didn't mind. Please e-mail me or send me your e-mail address.

Thanks,
BW

Hi all! We're hoping to move to STT or STX in a year or two...haven't decided which one yet but we're also looking for similar people. I'm 25 and he'll be 30 this spring. I'm in banking and real estate and he's in IT/computer programmer but we're looking to do something different! Our only worry is finding a place that allows pets!!

Stay in touch!
