I am interested in installing a solar hot water system on my house on STX. My question is what type of issues will I have when I'm off island (ie;2 months in the summer). Do I drain down the system? Cover the panels to prevent overheating? Any ideas.

we have solar and we don't do anything to it.....course right now we are there. i would think one thing for sure is to make sure your panel is covered/protected in case of a hurricane. so i guess you would turn it off. if you cover the panel would have to right??

Overheating wouldn't be an issue since there is a pressure relief valve... if you did drain it I would be concerned about biological growth within the empty space.

i will see what we do.....drain or not. have house sitters so so far not necessary to drain. and yes it does have a release valve.
