Any ideas about if the St Croix LEAP is open. I've been stopping by every weekend and gate are close no one answer the phone.

Cheech is a strange bird. He may just be taking a break. His hours of operation were never very regular.

Cheech of the Leap is a genius!

Charge a hefty fee to remove trees, keep the wood, and make amazing and expensive items. Not to mention setting his own hours....

I thought mahagony was illegal to harvest? The species native here is on CITES from 2003.

As the name of their collective might suggest, the artisans at St. Croix LEAP have a somewhat different attitude than the early traders did. Their trees have been felled by storms or are encroaching on a house or septic tank. These are trees that would end up in a brush pile otherwise, fires being the customary way of getting rid of dead wood.

Well it's not my place to judge at all nor will I but selling it (if it's the native species) does require the correct licenses and approvals from CITES.

Cheech is a fixture on STX, well respected if a bit "unusual". You do well not to judge.

CITES status refers to the commercial trade in lumber. Our Swietenia mahagoni trees are not protected in any way other than that. It grows well and quickly--plant all you can! Find a tree you like, collect it's seeds, soak 'em in water for a month or so, and put them in pots or flats. Before long you'll have a grove.

Just don't plant too near the house as every single leaf on the trees drop twice a yr., unless you wish to be up on your roof cleaning it and your gutters/downspouts and don't plant close to retaining walls, cisterns, etc.
You get the drift.........!
