PM = Private message
Go to the message that you want to reply to with a private message, click the link that says "Reply via PM", type your reply, click the "Post message" box and it will go to the author of that message privately (off the board). This link appears under each post on the message board.
Most folks aren't comfortable posting their email address (or phone number) in a public forum so this is a private way to contact someone without doing so.
