Hi all.

I have been reading this message board for awhile. Just found out today that I got a job in the school system for next Aug as a Physical Therapist if I want it. My son and I would be living on St Thomas for the school year 2005-06. I have a couple of questions for anyone who has experience with the schools. First are any of the public schools better than others?? I spoke with the admissions rep for the Antilles school and I would have to mortagage my house in the states to pay for one year!. I have been offered several different way s to get paid some including housing and some with a higher salery but no housing. Seems with the cost of housing it would be better to take the housing included. Also I can't afford to send my car over but they will give me $800.00 to help with a car or transportation. I would be coming with my 10 yo son so what are the better areas of the island we should look for housing? I will be covering most of the schools along with one other person working around the island and 2 days on STJ. Thanks for any help. We are planning a PMV for May 26 to look at schools and such. Is Villa Fairview a good place to stay for 5 days???
Thanks so much Lynne

Hello Lynne,

Public schools, better then others... your son is 10 years old. Thats what - 3rd or 4th grade. Sibilly School is a public elementary school, Peace Corps School also - they are both located in the 'country' and get a better description/commentary then the other schools - I don't know that they are truly that different though. The elementary level is ok, its the junior high public schools that really get the negative rap (peer pressure, kids that need additional help socially and academically combined with kids that are honor students, teen years, teachers, education system management...).

There are other private/parochial schools besides Antilles.

Examine the housing vs. pay option closely. You can find some apartment prices in the cost of living section on this site to use for reference. Maybe buy a used car on island.

Villa Fairview is a good spot and Ronnie, the owner, will be lots of help with answering questions you might have.

Thanks for the advice. My son will be in 5th grade and I will try to check out the webistes for those schools. His current teacher actually worked at St Peter and Paul years ago so she has been a good resource. I hope we can check out many things on a visit late May.

Hello Lynne,

Sts. Peter and Paul is located downtown. All Saints is also downtown, not sure if you looked at that one too. They are on opposite ends of town from each other, more or less. Sts. Peter and Paul school and cathedral are about one block in from the waterfront, not far from the Holiday Inn Hotel, in Savan area.

Thanks for the info. We will be in STT May 27-June 2 to check out schools, housing areas and the island in general.
