STX Business?

I am still waiting to hear back from JFL about a job; things certainly seem to move slower down there. But, that is fine with me. Anyway, I have a few bucks saved and I would be interested in investing should I take the job at the hospital. But I would also be interested in running a business on the side. I started/owned/operated an air freight brokerage for 8 years right out of college, so I am aware of how difficult business ownership can be and the devotion required. But, I have also earned an MBA in the meantime and hope I can avoid making some of the same mistakes. I want to maintain my career as a Lead RT but still have something that helps locally and, preferably, green/sustainable. Any ideas? I was thinking of popsicles done with all local goat milk and local ingredients or maybe something with solar/wind turbines.

No offense but you can keep the goat milk Popsicle. Yuck!
No I'm not into goat cheese either but enjoy goat stew, curried goat, goat water, etc.
Don't know why I enjoy some but not the others.

If you are not licensed in the VI, you may want to start that proceeding asap as DLCA is backlogged when it comes to issuing licenses.
Last yr., I applied to renew my license in Feb. since it expired at end of March (and paid all the fees in Feb). Finally had it in hand by mid-August. Luckily our board knew of the problem and would allow one to continue to work if proof of application, payment and tax clearance letter was provided.

JFL is having serious difficulties (again) so it may be awhile before you hear back. If you really want the job, find a specific person to stay in contact with about it.

Why, why, WHY would you want to work at JFL?

You are either a saint or a fool.

I would think that any business depending on discretionary spending would have a tough time on stx at this point. Many if not most folks have reduced their non-essential spending, and I can only imagine this is going to continue for some time. Even those with consistent dependable sources of income are being hit with the high wapa bills, having to pay 2 years of property taxes each year for the past 3 years or so, and higher costs on everything else as well, from groceries to restaurant meals to gas to airline tickets etc etc. Just my opinion of course, but I'd think carefully before investing a lot in a new enterprise.

Wow. Not encouraging news. Alana, are you an RT? Every state is different and I have heard horror stories about our board here in CA, but never had a problem so long as my check gets cashed. It is my understanding that my CA license is completely transferable. As stated in previous posts, I have worked at a district hospital for the past 8 years and have seen it all; the entire building condemned, the top 8 leadership folks being fired illegally by the board (We are still paying off lawsuits for that), backroom dealings with unions, the building of 3 story structures that remain empty to this day, etc.. I am not new to illegal/unfavorable/downright bad decision making. It isn't my business. I care for patients and I want to run a side business. I appreciate your input, I was just hoping you could give me some ideas on the needs of STX in regards to my ideas.

Nope, not an RT, a Realtor but very recently (last week) had inquiry for a 13 week stay at my rental in STT from a company that headhunts and finds living accommodations for traveling doctors but can't figure out a start date as waiting on licensing from VI to be issued.
They were supposed to be on Island by the 19th but had to cancel as now they don't know when licenses will actually be issued so cannot determine an arrival/start date. They said they started procedure a few weeks ago and in states normally only takes 2 weeks.
You might want to check out the licensing issue now rather than wait.

If you are accustomed to working under adverse conditions, you'll probably fit in well at any hospital in the VI.
Sounds like some of the same atrocious leadership issues we have here. Note: No-one in our Legislature seems to be able to learn from past mistakes, they just keep on keeping on which is why we are in the sorry state of affiars we now find ourselves in.

I live in STT and we have similar issues with STX but more tourism oriented thanks to a large natural harbor that can support many cruise ships in our short "high/winter" season. STX not as lucky but I'll let them fill you in on what their issues are and may be in the future.

Good Luck to you on your move.

It is my understanding that an RT license to practice in the VI is completely transferable from any state, much like Hawaii was for many years (maybe even now). I am a San Diego native so I understand living costs and what we call the "San Diego Discount"; make less and pay more. Groceries and electricity seem to be higher in STX than here, but rent is actually lower. I can rent my condo for $1000- $1100 and I am 15 minutes from the beach in a working class neighborhood.

Best to check with Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs:
http://dlca.vi.gov/businesslicense/steps.htm
Call them & actually speak to someone.

No tings easy on St. Can't, especially if you want to get a license to operate a business. Many businesses have failed here due to outrageously high electricity costs and the closing of the oil refinery. The Department of Planning & Natural Resources recently announced new regulations making it even harder to install wind turbines. Another wave of residents moving back to the mainland has also begun as hope is slowly replaced by despair and poverty. But, hey...come on down!

DLCA is a joke. We have been getting the run around for almost a year trying to get a business license.

It's cost effective to pay a business expediter to do it for you. I did that right from the beginning and for the next 15 years he renewed my license annually with never a delay or a problem.
