Cheap is not a complimentary word or anything anyone wants to be called. I think thats where you may be rubbing people the wrong way. And I simply do not believe that people everywhere not just in the us, europe but the world try to make their dollar goes as far as possible. Where the heck do you think IKEA came from if not Europe and thats a huge bargain furniture/home center store, it definitely similar to walmart in many many ways. They have the same type of stores you just may not be familiar with them, usually they just are not chains.

I think that marking stuff 75% off is marketing. We don't have competition here, and that is what drives the price. I am sorry that our legislators are so challenged economically, as their response to high prices is to demand price controls.

JohnB,
Which island are you on, and if you don't mind my asking, who is your mother-in-law's doctor? Thanks.

No, it's not marketing totally. Years ago I followed stuff in Dillard's & the items really were 75% off. I'm sure the marketing thing does come into play but not always.

Meant to mention, I go to Europe every year & shopping there doesn't seem to be the sport or total pasttime for people as MUCH as it is in the States. Yes, they have discount places but consumerism isn't the end-all for most as much as it is in the States. Just a different way of life.

When are you and your family moving to Croix? Have you found a place to leave yet? If not we have a COndo in Coakley Bay, east end, very safe and really nice! 3 Bedroom, 2 bath! Pool and Restaurant on grounds!

Waiting for confirmation. But it will be shortly.
Place sounds good. perhaps send more info, PM if you like.

Sounds like St Croix will be a challenge rather than a paradise. But one we will be taking on I think.

We bought that book that is advertised on every USVI site re moving there. I thought after the first 10 pages that it was going to be a love in. I was wrong - good info. The chapter on insects scared the bejaysus out of me - not too good with that kind of stuff. Centipedes that bite and scorpions, poisonous toads?......none of that was in the brochure. What about spiders? Anything nasty that likes to live under bed clothes or inside shoes? I think I will start a new topic

nene, I've vacationed here for 25+ years, lived here while my son wnt to high school for two years at a small private school ( West Indies Academy) that is now history. That was what my son needed at the time and he eventually graduated college and he's come back to stx to live with his family. I moved here @ 3 years ago permenently. In all my time here the worst crime committed against me washaving my swim fins stolen from my unloked car with the windows down.

STX is a beutiful, small tropical island. We are lucky to have industry and businesses that don't reley on tourism and we are excited about the redevelopment of STX as a cruise ship stop and the posibility of being designated as a National Cultural destination. A new rum factory is being built soon, a 150 acre aquaculture facility is planned and approved, there are a number of planned resorts being considered, the VI has a new Education Comminsioner, the corrupt politions are going to jail, the police are hiring more officers and better training. Most of the crime is centered on drugs and generally takes place in areas you would never go to or late at night and early in the morning when peop;e who have been partying come out of the bars. The simple rule is that if you get a bad vibe get out of the situation and learn from it and keep your wits about you.

The tropics have bugs but with good house keeping and responsible pest control it's not a big deal. Do it. Move here for the 2 years .Experience paradise. It will be a wonderful experience for you and your family and probably spoil you for life,
