Does anyone know of a deep sea fishing charter operating out of STX that allows more than 6 people? I have a party of 7 and from what I understand there are no exceptions to the 6 person maximum rule on the boats I've looked at so far.

Thank you!

Have you tried the operator out of STX Marina? Large Hatteras Sport Fisherman moored at main pier? If not, call Marina and talk to Larry Angus, he will know.........definately.

Larry has been at STX for over 30 years on STX.

The reason for six people is the license required by the captain and Coast Guard requirements of the boat. A "6 pack" license is the first step in a captains license. It only allows 6 paying customers plus crew.

It is all about the vessel -- a vessel must be an Inspected Vessel to carry more than 6 passengers - a licensed Captain who has a OUPV - Operater Uninspected Power Vessel - [a six pack license] cannot operate an Inspected Vessel - a Masters Merchant Marine Document is the next step up the license chain and allows a Captain to operate Inspected Vessels. No level of Licensed Captain can take more than six passengers on an Uninspected Vessel - it is all about the vessel!

a 6-Pak captain CAN operate an inspected vessel... but not with more than 6 passengers on board. Captains are limited by their license or the max of the vessel, whichever is less.
