Good Day All,
I am moving to the islands. Don't yet know which. My new employer has left that decision to me. Which would you choose and why. Please let me know where you are now as well. Thanks

! have to make up my mind in the next 24 hours!

Since you are a sailor -- StThomas - no contest -- many more destinations including the BVI within an easy sail.

STX is more laid back and rural. Not as much night life, less crowded - twice the size / same number of people.
STT is more tourist orientated, more night life and shopping.

It doesn't matter which we'd choose. This is the kind of post where people start slamming the island they don't live on. You'll have to make the decision for yourself as we did. Have you been here? In this case especially, I'd suggest you visit before moving & spend some time on your choices & then make up your mind.

Dear Trade,
Of course I will have to make my own decision and I certainly didn't want people to slam either island. I was merely asking for opinions about what individuals saw as the most redeeming qualities of the island they are on. Yes, I have been to both islands; neither long enough to make a fully informed decision, nor will I have the leisure of dwelling on this as I take in information on each. I have one decision to make and can't change it later, sorry if I upset you. My short visit to each island has shown me many redeeming qualities of each and whatever my decision I believe I will be quite happy.

Exit Zero and Terry,
Thanks you for your helpful comments.

It's a very personal decision, but since you asked....

If it doesn't matter which island, can you try one for a while and then the other? What is the job? Just curious. ExitZero made an excellent point. Definitely St. Thomas for sailors. I lived on St. Thomas for 12 years, 10 of that on a sailboat. I have been on St. Croix for close to 2 years now, and I LOVE it. We moved over to STX for several reasons, mostly real estate. It's less expensive on STX. But we also enjoy the less crowded openess. STX is twice as large, but you can drive from one end to the other in the same time it would take to do that on St. Thomas, maybe even less.

I lived and worked in Red Hook (STT), where everything is very convenient, but for people who work in town, traffic can be an issue. Public transportation is definitely better on St. Thomas, though. There are more flight options on STT and a Home Depot. May sound like a strange thing to mention, but believe me, whenever I go back to STT, there is always at least one stop at HD.

How old are you? We are a bit older, so a big night out for us is Trivia at a local hang out. That might make a difference too. Plenty of younger people on STX, just more on STT, and more nightlife options.

I think STX has more beaches, but I could be wrong. Plenty of water, water everywhere on either island, plus St. Thomas is just a quick ferry ride to St. John, and the British Islands aren't far either. If you do bring a sailboat down, that will be a big factor.

Hope this helps some. When will you make the move?
