dear stxfoodie...

ok...you have really piqued my interest in TopHat...the atmosphere sounds great...much like the small restaurants in Copenhagen that are tucked away on sidestreets...cozy...very personal...and the Danish fare will be quite a treat...i spent alot of time working in Denmark during much of the 90's...mostly in Copenhagen...and the Danes appreciate nothing more than an intimate and cozy place to gather with a friend for food & drinks...

ditto on your Salud reviews...always a good experience and great food...

Any updates on the STX restaurants that closed this year? I'll be back on island for four months in December and am curious what will and won't be open.

Anyone know what the deal is on the "new lowered prices" at Galleon? Great idea. Earlier in this thread I think I was complaining about how many places increased prices during last summer's WAPA prices and haven't brought them back down. It seems like more places are beginning to realize that they are losing business by pricing many people out. I eat lunch out once a week now versus every day. As for dinners, the new baby has prevented that one for the most part.

has quality or merchants lowered their prices yet?they jacked every thing up and have still not lowered their prices as far as i can see and the galleon has always been overpriced all the way back to bernard and gail

i don't think that the galleon is overpriced. i feel like i get my money's worth...while it is A LOT of money, lol, the service is really awesome. it's one of the only fine dining establishments, in my opinion. i think that leslie is trying to get it away from the "special occassion" type of restaurant, which is the point of the lowered prices deal. i haven't been there in awhile, but i know they were doing an italian dinner/wine pairing for like $45/pp.

All you can eat crab at H2O last night. I embarrassed myself, I ate so much. Every cluster that came out was steaming! We will definitely be back.

Just had another Vinny's pizza. Another negative experience...sorry! The last time we had V's pizza, we thought maybe we hadn't ordered well. So tonight we specifically asked for "extra" olives and shrooms". My husband placed the order and actually said "I'll be glad to pay whatever, but I want it loaded up". On a 16" pizza, we couldn't find 5 mushrooms!, about 5 olive slices per slice and no red sauce on the entire pizza.

Hubby was planning to look at the pizza before accepting it, but got way-laid by a phone call and friends leaving the restaurant, so he was feeling a bit teed off, so he called to speak to the manager. Was told the manager /owner was busy cooking and couldn't come to the phone.

csc2c - please let us know how you like the top hat. I'd love to hear your opinion.

Went to Dashi last night - ended up having dinner just by virtue of laziness. It was good as usual. Sushi was excellent. Tostoni's with shredded beef were nice. The spicy hot n sour soup special was good...not great. I hate the way they use that damned vegatable mix in everything. I've asked for no broccoli many times and i always get the same response - its premixed. How f'ing hard can it be to not put broccoli in my food. I had to pick it out of the soup. blech..... But the rest was good and Jerry was bartending so that was fun too. They now have a small cuvinet (Salud envy anyone?)

Anyway, I'd do a full review but I'm wiped out from work these days.. Should be thankful I have a job but I'm just beat.

Cheers -

Stxfoodie.

I like Dashi, I go there often, but I wish we had a real sushi bar on STX like Beni Iquana's on STT. Dashi pretty much only does maki sushi and special dishes. Poor selection of sashimi and niguiri. I keep asking for Ikura but no luck. Also I wish they still opened for lunch like they did when they were on Company St.

Going back to Golongal tonight. First time in 3 months.

Once or twice a month. Makes for very expensive sushi.

Rotorhead....if you buzz my house one more goddamned time I'll start using a slingshot to lob mangoes at your rotors! This retribution may be avoided if you bring sushi back from St. Thomas. Your call.

i agree - i wish we had some sushi competition so that we could have some more options. Dashi is great, i love it, but i would love more of a selection of things - and not just more things in the maki roll. I imagine it must be really hard to get things delivered here and people to roll it. they used to have soy wraps - SO GOOD! they stopped carrying them but i make sure to ask every time. i always get the same response - "everyone always asks for those, but they don't get them". if everyone is asking (or maybe it's just me, lol) then shouldn't we try to get them in? even if you charged a little more? i also wish they tried brown rice in their rolls.

I'm headed to Oahu in a few weeks and I'll send shusi vibes to the islands. I wonder if I can bring bach some sushimi ahi on a 16 hour flight.

I definitely will be piggin on poke in Kahuku and a few visits to the shrimp truck.

Although Rum Runners is where my husband and I met, hung out at often (for that reason) and has the best view in town, I have never been all that impressed with the food or the price, except for brunch on Sundays. Brunch at Blue Moon in Fredericksted is good too.

Also, Breezes is good for their brie cheese, roasted garlic and bread appetizer. Good views also. Staff is always friendly and consistent.

Angry Nates is a good deal for the money and you can't beat the view. Obviously, we spent a lot of time on the boardwalk area in C'Sted.

Agree with everyone who says Brew Pub's food/service leave a bad taste in their mouth. Unimpressive, takes too long and always cold. However, it IS where the "in" crowd seems to hang out for some reason?? Savant is great - a bit pricey but worth it, if you ask me. Tutu Benne is impressive also. There is this little hamburger joint heading out to East end but I cannot remember the name of it. Food is great if you can just deal with all the flies.

I really enjoy the brewpub. The beer is good, the view is great, the vibe/scene is fun (at least during the day/early evening) and I've generally found the servers to be friendly and nice. The food? It is what it is. It's average overall--some dishes are better than others--which is what I'd expect from a brewpub (where the emphasis should be on the beer). I'd agree that the food at Angry Nate's is much better, but it's a different format--a true restaurant. If you're looking for good beer in a fun setting, the brewpub is a great bet.
