when i went up to the states for doctor, dentist, lawyer stuff i stayed with my deceased sister and remember i had not been to the states for a few years and lol i was terrified at first because she used to drive like 80 miles an hour talking on her cell phone putting on her makeup and drinking coffee all the while doing this on the WRONG side of the road, haha it took me about a week to convince my self i was not going to die, it took about a month to get over the culture shock of being around all the white people again and living in an upscale suburb, i still have nightmares lol

Trw, do they have pit bull fighting there? I remember going down the road from the "beast", heading toward Carambola Golf Course and saw a dead pit bull on the side of the road. He had a chain around his neck and had been dragged behind a car or truck apparently... almost unrecognizable..most of his skin had been torn off his body...literally made me sick to my stomach and I've always wondered why someone would do that to an animal. I do know that dog fighting is big in the states and sometimes they will kill the animal when it loses a fight. GOD, I can hardly talk about this...feeling so sad... What do you think happened there?

I hope those idiots who did that get dragged behind a car & let them figure out what it feels like. That's not "culture," it's sociopathic behavior.

well i just finished watching "for the boys" on cable the movie with bette and jimi, they play a pair of entertainers and the movie spans 3 wars ww2 korea and vietnam, it's a good tear jerk movie but it started me thinking, intellectually i know ww2 was a good war, we needed to beat the nazis and their plan for world domination, korea and vietnam i'm not so sure about, i know ultimatly we were fighting russia and these 2 piss ant countries were just russian fronts and supposedly we were at war to stave off communisim, now with iraq we're supposed to believe that it's because saddam was killing off the opposition and thats why we invaded and i guess my argument about that one is castro has been doing the same since 59 and we never killed him so why bother with saddam, OIL we all know it, none of us believe the GOV propoganda so why not just come out and say it, we need the oil, within the next 50 years we will be at war for our lives and country with china and we need that oil, so intellectually whats the problem the, mideast has oil and we need it, honestly i see no problem with that scenario, the problem i have is all of the lies that go with it, tell us the REAL reason we need to invade another country, i'm realist enough to understand, intellectually i know we need that to survive as a nation because our gov is too stupid to figure out other methods of energy and i know that the oil companies run things. I KNOW ALL OF THAT and i have no problem with nation building as long as you are honest about it. I have no problem with the idea of an "American" empire, maybe it's the first step to a real world as one rule so we can advance as a species, who knows and sorry for rambling, next question are we better as a nation than china? and are individual human rights more important than the nation as a whole

The new animal cruelty laws that were put into affect 2 years ago are still being tested. Although cock-fighting is still legal (as it is in Texas, Puerto Rico, and other places).... dog fighting is not and it is much less frequent than it has been in the past. However... it still exists. The dragged dog was probably a loser in a fight. Sick.

Anyway... the STX Animal Welfare Center takes this stuff seriously and although they have historically not had a lot of success in the past they do want to catch these people and get a case through. It is only when these people start being called on their behavior and PROSECUTED that we will see a change. If you see someone mistreating an animal, or even an animal that is being abused in their owners property... call the shelter and report it. It can be anonymous. The warden will then have the right (and obligation) to visit that person and check on the condition of the animal and issue them a warning if one is merited. He can confiscate the animal if the abuse is notable. The visit alone communicates a very important message. We must not continue to tolerate this behavior.

The shelter does a great job and things are much much better here now than they were 8 or 9 years ago...but we have a long long way to go. Report Animal Abuse when you see it. Let the warden do his job. The more publicity this gets the faster the behavior will stop.

The shelter has a great Humane Education program that teaches against Animal Cruelty (among other things) and helps teach our future generations to change their attitudes about dog abuse, chaining, dog fighting, proper pet care, etc.

I wouldn't count on it moving ahead that fast...they still have a ton of CZM issues to deal with. The ruling just means Traxco has to work through/with CZM to contest/change Golden's permits.
If this thing is going to move ahead, it should be as ecologically safe and sound as possible and right now it is not...

stxem,
Not looking for a debate, just want to know what is unsafe ecologically? I don't know that's why I ask.

Lizard, "unsafe ecologically" would be toxic waste, killing off wildlife and such, sewage backups, not using the right materials in buildings..basically going "Green", as they say...IMHO that is.

Charlotte,
That much I Know or can figure out, I guess my real question is what was he (The Developer) doing or not doing on that particular project. That would make it unsafe?

Great Pond Bay is a sensitive ecological zone, for example, it is home to several bird species and their breeding grounds as well as surrounding seagrass beds and patch reefs. If you disrupt one part of this community, there could be severe impacts on another part. Major digging and building can cause silting of surrounding water thereby killing coral and seagrasses. Noise and habitat destruction may disrupt of bird breeding grounds to the point where the birds may not nest at all. CZM is still very concerned with the development because of the negative environmental impact. Here is the latest SEA newsletter that summarizes the situation on pages 1 and 5:

Charlotte,
No insult was taken, my question was a little vague. My answer was probably a little snappy didn't mean it that way. I'm just curious about this project, it seems to be going on and on and on etc.

and the only reason Traxco is involved is that they do not want another casino here on island because that would dip into their profits from the divi, i doubt very much the people who own traxco care about the enviroment they just don't want any competition.

No, I won't be home on the 12th. We have had several setbacks with mom. We have almost lost her 4 times in the last 3 days. Yesterday she had a stroke. This afternoon she is off the breathing tube and is alert and talking. I was with her when she had the stroke. I cannot describe how awful that was. I think I would like for Doug and JJ to go back to the island on the 12th as planned, though being without them breaks my heart. It is too hard to hide my emotions from JJ and I don't want him to be afraid.

Everybody please keep posting about your lives. It brightens my day when I get the chance to get on the computer.

My daughter is still giving tomatoes away. I am really upset that I am not getting to eat any of them. LOL. Last year I planted corn. I got to eat 2 ears before I had to leave and come to the states for some reason. That was the best corn I ever ate in my life. I keep thinking those tomatoes will be the best as well.

My children here have been great and it always amazes me that no matter what they all pull together when there is a crises. I have gotten to see my pregnant daughter everyday and got to hear her babys heartbeat. So cool. I talk to her tummy and tell the baby that I am the best grandmother ever and we will have great adventures together. JJ thinks it is a little girl and he talks to her as well.

So it's good times and sad times but we will get through it.

Hey Lizard is your tune up done yet?

Trade JJ does miss his crabs. My daughter woke up the other night to one crawling across her stomach. I think she was just happy that it wasn't a centipede.

Take care everyone.

Tam

I'm back from Charleston, SC and the Cooper Bridge Run trip I took with some girlfriends (sorry, no I am not on STX, but feel like a part of the family or wannabe family).
I missed checking the boards while I was away and just wanted to say hello to everyone.

Tammy-I am so sorry to hear about your mom's condition worsening. You're in my thoughts!

Tammy, best of luck to your mother. Hope all works out well. Tamara, what's the Cooper Bridge Run.

I just got back from our condo association board meeting. Why I ever went back on the board is beyond me. I don't do well with decisions by committee. And nobody told me that getting old = being exhausted all the time. 🙁

Morning Trade,

Here is a link to the info on the bridge run
http://www.bridgerun.com/

I have a group of friends that I have been going down with for the last 6 years with! This is a fun trip with lots of great seafood, some shopping, but mostly just relaxing at the beach. The sad part is that none of us even did the actual run this year because it was supposed to be thunder storming and that didn't sound like a fun vacation!
