Hi! I am planning on moving to STX or one of the VI's in less then a month. I have been searching for jobs but have not found too much, from what I hear it is best just to show up, correct? I do have a job offer with St. Croix kayak, does anyone know anything about this company? I have also heard that STX is the hardest place to find a tour guide job, which is what I am looking for. And that cruise ships do not go there, people have also told me not to go there because I will be shot, is crime that bad in STX? should we looke into going to another island? ANy advice, or knowledge on STX< tour guide jobs, what to do would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much, jenna

Hello Jenna,

You could find a lot of answers to your questions by searching thru the posts, but for a brief rundown...

Crime is the same on STT as STX. Crime mostly has to do with drugs. Theft is a little high on both islands, but the population is low so the stats seem higher. Using common sense and locking doors, etc. will get you thru. Some things happen randomly, but I like to think that for 99.99% of the time bad things don't happen. Nicer stat - no?

Nothing really replaces being here to find out about jobs, homes, transportation, etc. I highly recommend a PMV (Pre-Move Visit). You just are able to plan better. Cruise ships are supposed to start going to STX again next year. Tour guide job might be easier to find on STT or STJ, but still a lot of tourism on STX as well.

If you are going to be here in less than a month, I would just get a place to stay first. Bring enough money to get by until you get transportation and a job lined up. Bring an open mind and a smile. Life is very different here. Good for some and too much for others. You will see when you are here. Good luck with everything. Let us know how it all goes! 😉

Jenna,

You will hear a lot of people talk about the islands, and some of it has to be taken with a grain of salt. There are about 50,000 people living on St. Croix, and the population is slowly growing. Does this sound like a place where crime is out of control?

St. Croix Kayak has a website. There are several ecotour companies here. This is a great island if you're into outdoor stuff. As with anywhere else, finding a job here depends a lot on persistance.

Please take time to thoroughly review this wesite. It has a lot of information.

Hello Jenna,

You are right; many times for jobs in tours, wait staff ect. you have to be on island. As for tour jobs - there are more on St. Thomas because of the cruise industry however St. Croix does have some tours as well. You already found a job with the kayak tour, which is good. The Buck island snorkel tours are popular on St. Croix- do you have any boat experience? There are also walking tours, taxi tours, horseback riding... Are you moving alone? Anything else you might be interested in so you have more options?
