Suggestions on where to meet new people on STX

Hi everyone,

So we, a couple in their late 40's, moved to Stx a couple of months ago.
Having moved here from "The friendly island", I have to say, I have experienced more friendly people here in this short time then I did on Sxm in 4 years.
Needless to say we're just loving it here!

Now, my question, any suggestions in great ways to meet new people here?

We like diving, hiking, boating (no boat yet though), walking, and of course just relaxing by the pool or on the beach.

We live on the east side of the island.

Thanks for your input!

do either of you work?
every one I know i met throught work and hubbies work.
if you quilt or crochet, i think they have free classes offered in the island trader?
do you have any other hobbies?

Yes, husband works, I probably go back to work in October.

Was wondering if there are any clubs to join?

Or regular events/gatherings?

there is trivia pursuit at restaurants, but i don't know which. there is a biker club -not hells angels or anything like that. there are two quilt clubs i know about.

I hope other people chime in because we don't get out much

The STX yacht club Friday nite happy hours and Wed night dinners, trivia on Sat , golf scrambles during high season at the reef golf course, Ziggy's has a few events, there is a painting club called the palletiers, a group that rides road bicycles, the St Croix hiking club

I've meters of friends at he beach. Cane Bay, Rythms at Rainbow Beach, and the Mermaid beach at the Bucaneer are my favorites. They all have eating places with friendly staffs and very social beach-goers. Ziggy's is certainly a great idea for someone on the East Side.

Just curious -- what made you choose to move here from SXM? We would have chosen SXM if not for the legal/financial complexities. I'm really glad we chose STX and we love it here but we wouldn't have even considered coming here if SXM were less complicated.

Thanks for all the suggestions, really appreciate it!

To Rhstoo: why prefer Stx over Sxm?

mmm, did you mention legal/financial complexities? A big one right there, very high income tax, difficult immigration system to say the least.
We also found it to be very hectic, not much peace and quite.

You will LOVE the St Croix Hiking Association. Http:// WWW.stcroixhiking.org. I belong and I live on St Thomas. We went to Trinidad last month and had a blast! Some photos are posted on YouTube under Island Hikers.

Also check St Croix Environmental Association - SEA. They do hikes and sea turtle watches and other things.

Lots of friendly people hang at Angry Nates, down by the wharf, by King Christian hotel. If it is dead there, there are options a few yards away. You can bring scraps of food and feed the blue runners at dusk... that always is a conversation starter.

Great suggestions. I've been meaning to get on the mailing list for the hiking for a while now.

Don't know if you are political or not, but, since it is an election year the political organizations are a great place to meet like minded persons. You can check them out on Facebook. St. Croix has several listed on there and they are very active. I've met some like-minded new friends there.

We have met the nicest people when we go to see Kurt Schindler play music. We are also a couple in our 40's.
Music brings people together.
Off the Wall on Monday nights is fun. Open Mic night.
Tuesday night at off the wall is beach bingo. Fun place to meet locals.
Wednesday night at above the cliff is Beer of Fortune. Fun game and a great way to meet others. You do not have to drink if you don't want to.
Hope this helps.

Once a month the Sunset Jazz in F-sted you can meet some nice people. Not near as loud as the Schindler events.
As someone mentioned Trivia nights, Mondays at the Palms and Tuesdays has moved but won't know where until Sept when we get back. They are both team event but most people will let you join in.
Bingo is held some Tuesdays, don't know which, at Off the Wall, don't know which.
Usually every Sunday morning around 9:00AM a group form Crabbs dive club dives at Cane Bay. Just show up early and hang out until you see them, they are more than happy to have new divers and will give you info about the club.

We have an awesome triathlon community here -- fun group who have all sorts of varied interests. Great for newbies and pros alike!
www.vitf.org for event info, might be fun just to come out to watch and meet people.

Finfolk Caribbean Swimmers (which is also now surprisingly on Facebook!) is a SUPER awesome group that does long ocean swims together on Saturday mornings at 8am, usually 2 miles. PM me for more info or the schedule.

At the Bistro, in line at the post office, at Cost U Less...friendly people are everywhere. Once you meet them once, you'll see them all over the place.

Example: If I were to say that I am a dark-haired woman in my 30s who is frequently seen hauling one to three adorable boys around town (one in a St .Mary's uniform, one little towhead, and one fat baby in a baby seat)...most often at the GB post office, Bistro, Beeston Hill Fitness Center..............how many of you could say that you know exactly who I am! 🙂
(Including you, picaflores, who I think might be my neighbor?!)

When we are on island, we enjoy going to Southgate Baptist Church. It is located east of Christiansted a few miles west of The Reef Golf Resort. Services are at 10:45A Sunday morning. They also get together Sunday nights and have different events during the week. We have found many friendly and interesting people there. It is an alternative to meeting people at restaurants or bars.
