Switching from AA to Cape Air in PR

I just book my flights back to STX and the back to AZ. This time we will be flying AA to PR and then Cape Air to STX. Does anyone know if we have to get our bags at PR and take them to Cape Air or are they transferred by AA like they did with American Eagle?

I think blu4u meant to say "code shares".

From my traveling, if booked thru American Airlines, they transfer the bags(ie one time booked thru American and they had me coming to STX thru Cape Air).

If not booked thru American or on points, and a site like Kayek, the bags are not transferred. You have to leave the secure area, pick up your bags, and go thru the checkout point again. And the kicker below the wasist, you have to pay Cape Air for your checkin bags----although you might have had already paid(ie my last trip traveling with the grandson)

I call Cape Air to verify, as this might be a factor on how much luggage you travel with.

When you check the luggage just be sure the stickers say STX. You also should know your Cape Flt number as it won't be in American's system.

If AA has an interline agreement with Cape Air, it should not matter how you book your ticket. You should be able to check your bags all the way through. The key is that you must have a printed copy of your Cape Air itinerary at check in, so that the agent with your originating airline can see that you are ticketed for your connection and enter your connecting info into their system to generate the baggage tag.

You'll have to get your luggage if you're on a puddle hopper.

last summer i was suppose to checked all the way through, but when i got off plan in PR they told me i had to go to baggage and claim bag and then recheck. so make sure you get baggage checked and marked all the way....... they tried to recharge me. and for my dog.

Good advice from all and some first hand experiences----but no matter wha happens with your luggage, when you arrive in St Croix we can be waiting with some cold rum drinks for you guys.

PS I call, have names you spoke with available when you check in .......and be prepared for the worst....you will have to retrieve your luggage and recheck it in...........cause the real answer might be it depends who is working at the airlines when you check in and later arriive in PR.

At your first check-in, ask them to check the bags through to STX. They'll say yes or no. Or look at the last airport code printed on the tags, and pick up your bags there.

I've done it to STT a few times; my bags have always been checked all the way through. You book on the AA website, and it will book your entire flight.

When I do this, the system always gives me some nonsense about an extra fee for paper tickets because it thinks the Cape Air tix can't be booked electronically, but then the confirmation email arrives and tells me this fee has been "refunded" (i have never seen it actually charged to my card) and an e-ticket issued.
