tax refund arrived!

Eighteen months after filing my 2004 tax return, my refund arrived this weekend. I had given up. They even included a small amount of interest. Unbelievable. Back in April when I asked the BIR office what was up with my return from the previous year, they insisted that all refunds had long since been paid and that I must have had errors on my return and wasn't entitled to a refund. No actual explanations or errors were defined. Five months later a refund check arrives. I guess that means they like the fact that I'm now paying them a LOT in taxes and felt it was OK to rebate the little bit I've been entitled to for so long.

Alexandra,

DON'T COUNT ON IT! Next year when you file you will have to report the interest and PAY TAXES on that interest!!!
They only give it to you for a year and then take it back! REALLY this is true, not a joke.

Alexandra gets a stamped copy of your return when you take it to the IRS office in St. Thomas.
That office is run like all other government offices in the VI. They will loose your return and then say
they never received it. And you are SOL!! big time...tax payers be prepared!

I live on STX, not STT. They never said they had lost my return. They just didn't process it all the way through paying the refund until now. Someone sat on it for a while and probably figured since it was my first year on the island as a tax payer that they wouldn't pay a refund unless I was here another year and filed a second return. It still took another five months from filing my second return to get the appropriate response to my first one.
