Can anyone explain to me what the tax is for bringing say a Sony TV and BlueRay from the states to USVI?

The only time I've had to pay taxes on items brought into the USVI is when I've had brand new, in box items (furniture) shipped through VI Cargo. Customs has a copy of the invoice and will charge if the item is foreign made (not sure about domestic-made). There shouldn't be any tax on used household items.

Thank you! I thought it was a little odd that my father told me to just buy a new tv there when I have a perfectly good one here. Thanks for your help!

I would ship your Blu-Ray via USPS. Just make sure you pack it good and insure it. Or pack it your luggage. It shouldn't be that large.
How many inches is your Sony TV? Is it a flat screen?

Depending on the size and weight it may not be doable. The USPS will not accept oversize items. If you have to ship by another means it will be cheaper to buy one when you get to the VI. Not to mention what it will cost to take it back should you leave.
