Can anyone tell me why the taxis in STT are allowed to operate as shuttles at the airport in direct violation the contract?? If they are a taxi, they are supposed to take you directly to your destination and if you are a shuttle you can pack it like a cattle car (Moooooo)and go to multiple destinations.....Shuttles are not supposed to be operating at the airport. ..I know that essentially the answer is because they do what they want and nobody enforces the rule.....
However, its giving a very bad name to the island. Every single year, the tourist survey blasts the taxis and still nothing is done. Lets hope tourism takes a good hard look at this and pushes for meters for taxis or some other solution. If they are not going to have meters, they should have something like they have in San Juan, where you go to the taxi booth, tell them your destination and they give you a paper which states what you are required to pay.....No arguments and the next taxi in line takes you whether its a $5 fare or $100 fare. Maybe I am dreaming, but am just getting tired of seeing tourists get ripped off.......And while I am up here......Shouldn't $1 safaris be required to post on the side they are a $1 ride??? Or $2 if you are going across island.....They are always stopping and picking up tourists on their way back to the ship and squeezing them for $5-$10 per person from downtown to Havensight or Crown Bay......Remember when the water taxi tried to get up and running (low cost and helped reduce the traffic).....The taxi association had them run out of business......Anyway, that's all for now.......Love to hear some ideas and or solutions......
I think they should have put in a light rail system along the waterfront while this big road project is being done.....Kinda like the one that runs behind the hotels on the Vegas strip.......

Guess that would be a no. Been asked, kicked around and debated for years why the taxis can do any number of things. There are some outstanding taxi drivers on STT, wonderful, genuine people who take pride in offering quality service. Unfortunately there are many, many more just in it for the money, lots and lots of money. Not sure where their clout comes from, but they sure do have it.

Like WAPA, taxis have power because we give it to them. There is no competition, no enforcement and no means of redress.

To rehash,
The taxis pay little or no taxes, have tremendous political power(votes), and are one of the biggest problems facing us today.
No one can go anywhere, do anything, p/u or deliver due to the stranglehold of gridlock they bestow upon us.
All this for a "back to da ship"
or a $40 island tour, 12 people, 2 trips a day(do the math).

Watch them on the waterfront with money sacks being delivered to offshore accounts.

The possibility has been brought up time & time again, let them run water taxis, profit & alleviate the rest of us(& our guests) from the traffic!
They NEVER agree, they are all down down down, go go go, me me me, mine, mine, mine!

What about the rest of us??????????????

Edited to say:
Now, here`s a topic Trade could give us valuable input!
We miss you Trade!
