Thanks Joanne, Chantelle and Islander for your advice. Really looking forward to going to the USVI and being somewhere warm and sunny - the UK's freezing at the moment! Don't suppose you know how formal people are for work - would I need to bring smart shirts and so on? Also any suggestions for where to go out in Christiansted? All advice is gratefully received.
Many thanks
Emma

Emma,
The clothing for working really depends on the job. A few people wear suits & ties to work. Some wear "business casual". And some wear shorts, t-shirt and sandels or tennis shoes. I have worn my long pants twice in two months. I have yet to wear a tie.
As far as going out in C-sted, Stixx on the Boardwalk is nice. It's an informal place. Those are my favorite types of places. There are others and I'm sure lots of folks here on the board will give you ideas. I tend to hang on the north shore.

Thanks Ric. I'm a med student and my friend Felicity and I will be doing a placement at JFL Hospital in Dec and Jan. Not sure how smart we'll need to be. Think we might be able to get away with summer skirts and tops etc so long as we wear a white coat over the top! But at the end of the day there's no point filling my bag up with stuff I'm not going to use when that space could be used for a few bottles of rum to take home! Don't suppose you or anyone else has got any tips on what to do for Xmas and New Years? - our current plan involves getting quite tipsy! Once again many thanks

Hello Emma,

I worked with several doctors; one wore a suit every day; a suit and tie with jacket! Two others wore slacks and a long sleeve shirt and tie - no jacket. One of these would sometimes wear a white coat on top. Another doctor would wear slacks, dress shirt and white coat. The female doctors wore linen outfits; long skirts, blouses with jackets; long dresses; shoulders not exposed.... with a white coat on top. In terms of doctors I have been to over the years... pretty much all wore the white coat but you could see what they were wearing and it was usually long pants and dress shirt or long skirt with dress shirt or long dress. Sometimes it was more casual; I recall one guy was wearing old looking pants and a shirt - and to be honest it was really a turn off in terms of visual appearance of him being a doctor - he was in his private practice. As for at the hospital; some nurses wear scrubs or other hospital uniform... In the kids clinic and immunization area the nurses and doctors wore long skirts and blouses with white coats and men more slacks and shirt and white coat.

I am not sure what you mean by summer skirts and shirts?? If its long semi-dress skirts with nice blouses/shirts - then yes that is fine.

Have a great time.

As for going out for Christmas and New Years - look in the newspaper for special parties at different bars and hotels. I am sure Divi Casino will have music ect. And the restaurants will have special dinners and new years party favors and music. Bars often do the same. So look around and see which place offers what you are looking for.

Islander you are once again the source of all useful information. The dress code for work seems pretty much like in the UK. a white coat hides a multitude of sins. Although a pair of hotpants and a tiny top would kill off quite a few patients no matter how much coverage a white coat provided!!!
Felicity and I have just booked our flights today and are getting very excited about coming to the virgin islands and what we have now termed 'fun in the sun'!!!! We have decided upon a little holiday in STT before progressing to STX for our placement. We will probably place a message in the next couple of weeks with some last minute questions. Once again many thanks
