The dirty truth

Hey All,
Thought I might need a catchy title to get some attention since it's the same ol' topic. As condensed as I can make it here is the scoop. My wife her 9 year old and I are seriously contemplating relocation to St. Croix. They have been there twice, once when we got married at Carambola and I have been on numerous occassions thru the years. We have planned to move there in about 3 years, but now our 3 yr. plan has been accelerated since we just found out the city is taking our house for a road project. Eminent Domain, don't ya love it. So now we are looking at needing to be out of the way of the bull dozers by Spring of 06.
With that said, I would appreciate some info from those who are living in the USVI and specifically STX. Please not some dude in Alabama who is just really bored and once new a guy who....once.
We are both in our 40's, experience is in graphic design for the wife and I have a construction/landscape background with much mechanic/electrical/plumbing abilities. Our intent would be to have her daughter attend private school. We would like to purchase a home in the 100 to 200 range, but wonder if we should not rent first until we get a bit settled. Problem with that is when I try to search for rental homes all I get on the sites is $2000+ per week Villas. Not that I would mind that for 6 months or so but payment could pose an issue.
So that is the readers digest version of our tale, and I would truly appreciate anyone with real experience to give some imput on job opportunities and best ways to find them, house shopping, rentals?? schools, shipping fees, dog relocation ( big dogs 3 of em') and don't freak out or jump to conclusions but, info on guns. Can they be shipped over. Best locations to live, that we can afford anyway.
I,m sure you get the idea. Thank you for your help.

The "eminent domain" as passed under the Bush administration is something which I personally find WAY detrimental to landowners and I hope that you, along with others in your neighborhood, have registered your complaints with your local representatives?

I sincerely suggest that you research this forum before making any major move. I think you'll find that the majority of your basic questions have already been asked and answered in great detail.

As a caveat, don't expect to find that the machinations of politics here in the Virgin Islands are any better than those on the mainland.

I really wish you the best of luck!

Jobs in the construction trades are available year around. If you have a good work ethic, you will be highly in demand. I have contact with a builder who is seeking good laborers. He pays pretty well and has benefits for his employees. He's one of the few here who actually pays worker's comp, too. Send me a private message if you'd like his email address so you can contact him for a telephone interview to discuss possible employment.

There have been quite a few people posting on this site in recent months asking about jobs in graphic design. Companies here don't advertise all that well and could probably use such services. It's generally going to be freelance work.

There are some good private schools. The top two are Country Day and Good Hope, but as your daughter is still young, there are also some other options for her through middle school. I've heard some good reviews about A to Z Academy. In fact the builder I was talking about above sends one of his children there and the other to Country Day.

To find most jobs or rental properties, you need to be physically present on the island. Some people come for a visit a month or so in advance of their intended move so they can find a house, car and maybe a job, plus tour schools, check out grocery stores, open a bank account, set up a post office box, etc. There's a lot to do! Most rental properties do not allow animals. It is rare to find a place that would allow 3 large dogs. I have one 2-BDR property that will be available January 1st where dogs would be allowed. There is one property for sale in the St. John's area of the island that sounds compatible with your needs and price range. It is also close to a couple of private schools.

It is not illegal to own guns here, but you have to have a permit to carry one around. There is an indoor shooting range near Sunny Isle and also an outdoor range at the gun club on the south east shore of the island. Guns can be shipped in. You probably need to get the ammunition here, though, as shipping anything hazardous is tough to do these days.

Where are you moving from? There has been quite a lot of discussion on shipping dogs to St. Croix over the past couple of months. Each airline has different rules and can accommodate a different number of animals in cargo per flight. If you can get the dogs to San Juan, I can help you arrange to get them the rest of the way to St. Croix, as that is one of the biggest obstacles people find when shipping larger dogs.

Alexandra,

Regarding the graphics info you supplied. The phonebook (viphonebook.com, I think) lists agencies in STT and some numbers in STX. Are there no agencies there? If not, it sounds ripe for starting one. Also not sure about radio, tv and newspapers on STX.

Thanks again.
